Review

Too Dark to Sleep is a brilliant, well-written novel and Maggie Quinn is an incredible character, multifaceted and strong, despite setback after setback. This riveting story tells of Maggie's battles with a brilliant "bad guy" and with the darkness that threatens her after her breakdown. The suspense in this story is first-rate from its opening pages to the story's conclusion and makes Too Dark to Sleep a spine-tingling book that readers everywhere will adore.  -Alice DiNizo, Readers' Favorite

If the quality of her debut crime novel Too Dark to Sleep is anything to go by, Dianne Gallagher's name will spread quickly in crime fiction loving circles. This is a fine debut novel, and in Maggie Quinn, Gallagher has created a true one-off with as many layers as an onion. The descriptions of her creeping fears are sharp and realistically drawn-so much so that I found myself checking the shadows myself! It was with regret that I reached the last page of this book because I really enjoyed my time spent with Maggie, even though I had to keep all the lights on! More please. -Crime Fiction Lover

Chicago crime aficionados will love Dianne Gallagher's debut novel, Too Dark to Sleep... it is a fast read. I didn't want to put it down. I was fascinated by Gallagher's depictions of the subcultures of Chicago police detectives, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, and Stateville Penitentiary. It's a world of clout-influenced decision-making, where "who you know," nine times out of ten, trumps "what you know." After all, that's the Chicago Way! - Richard Reeder, Noir Journal

From the Author

It was a long road to releasing my debut novel, Too Dark to Sleep. But Maggie Quinn turned out to be one of those characters you could put anywhere and the scene would write itself. I hope you have as much fun reading as I had writing.

More About the Author

Life is Never a Straight Line

Growing up in rural Minnesota, Dianne attended the University of Minnesota where she got a BFA in Theatre. Although her initial interest was in performance, Dianne eventually focused on playwriting and had competition-winning scripts performed at that school.

After moving to Los Angeles so her husband could attend film school, Dianne switched focus to screenplays. While writing her own spec material, Dianne formatted, edited, critiqued and wrote independent scripts. While in Los Angeles, she was approached by writer Karen Hall and asked to edit and mentor a young writer Hall discovered while doing research on death row inmates. The professional relationship which lasted several years gave Dianne a unique look into the prison system and into the individuals sitting on death row.

A move to the Chicago area translated into a new focus on novels as well as a love for the big-shouldered city. Dianne edited, critiqued and ghosted a variety of fiction and nonfiction pieces while having great fun with her family. As projects she worked on were placed with agencies like Writers House, Dianne decided to start writing for herself. The result is the debut novel, Too Dark to Sleep.

The characters are very well defined.

Maggie Quinn was one of the best homicide detective for Chicago Area One before she had suffered a loss of her child and seen her life began spiraling down.

In the vein of Jeffrey Deaver thrillers, Dianne Gallagher's Maggie Quinn will quickly draw you in and have you following her every move as she desperately battles her own demons while trying to outmaneuver a mind-game-playing killer. With authentic Chicago details that add depth to Quinn's character, Gallagher's fast-paced plotting and psychological hairpin turns keep the reader guessing...and wanting more. Couldn't put this one down and can't wait for the next in the series! Two thumbs up!

Good, gritty fun that gives the likes of Mickey Spillane a run for his money. Yet, for all it's familiar feel and revisiting many of the classic pulp crime story topes, it still feels fresh and relevant. All that, and it has surprising depth and heart.

A smart story and thoroughly enjoyable read that grabs you from the get-go and doesn't let go.

Looking forward to reading the next Maggie Quinn novel!

This book was thoroughly unexpected! To say the least it was a dark, twisted story with a completely unforgettable heroine. Maggie Quinn is insightful, smart and totally flawed but one of the few characters in any books that I have read recently, that will haunt me long after turning the last page. The author takes you on a psychological journey that is disturbing & frightening, as you walk along with Maggie, feeling what she feels, knowing what she knows and realizing that this is a path you don't want to go down even as a casual observer, because there, but for the grace of god, go any one of us.

As detective novels go, it is on point with all the drama and frustration that comes from a legal system that is not always just and a villain that uses that fact to his advantage and then some. I would definitely read more from this author as I feel that I invested a lot of emotional currency in Maggie Quinn and need to know where she ends up.

I received this eBook free in exchange for an honest review.

Can't wait to see what happens to Maggie Quinn in the next installment! This book keeps you on the edge of your seat-I read it in two days! It grabs you from the very first page. Maggie is intelligent and not one of the guys like so many of the women detectives we see on TV or read about!

Let's hope we see more of Dianne Gallagher's writing!!

The main character is a detective who is multidimensional and likable. You figure out the murderer fairly quickly but it keeps your interest because you really don't know who is going to come out on top . The author handles the issues of mental illness in a compassionate, realistic fashion. The book is dark at times but necessary for the story. This is the first book of a series and I cannot wait for the next one.
