Book Description

“Pamela Burford creates the memorable characters readers love!” – The Literary Times

A romantic comedy short novel, originally published by Zebra books, a division of Kensington Publishing Corp.

Rule Number One: Never mix business with pleasure. New York restaurant reviewer Lina Holland learned that lesson by watching her beloved mentor self-destruct, and she's not about to make a similar mistake, even if the chef and owner of the restaurant she’s secretly reviewing is the most sexalicious hunk who ever seared a T-bone. It's not enough to be scrupulously impartial, she must avoid even the merest whiff of favoritism. Date a restaurateur? She can't allow herself to even think about it. Okay, she thinks about it, but that's all. Really!

Chef Eric Reid is a widower struggling to raise twin boys and keep his fledgling Long Island restaurant afloat long enough for word of mouth to lift it out of the red. Little does he suspect that the intriguing new customer groaning in ecstasy over his bourbon pecan tart is none other than the legendary Lina Holland, the reviewer whose thumbs-up could spell the difference between colossal success and the extermination of his lifelong dream. No one in the industry knows what Lina looks like, but he's convinced she's a brash, zaftig shrew who applies her makeup with a putty knife. When he finds out how wrong he is, the fun really starts!

Throw in a buttinsky roommate, a lecherous ex-husband, bribery by chocolate, and the fishing excursion from hell, and the result is, well, too darn hot!

2.0 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment September 4, 2012

I liked the premise so much, but after the first chapter or two I should have known it wasn't going to deliver. The characters were infuriating. They behaved like hormonal teenagers, sulking one minute and making out the next. They have these dramatic blow-ups, but then someone says something cutesy and everyone's all smiles. There's a prolonged scene-hopping episode of escalating misunderstandings that was clearly supposed to be funny, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. These are 30-something professionals, for heaven's sake. Is it too far beyond them to use the English language to communicate? No? Too hard? It's easier to just mope and be hurt? Okay then.

The sex was pretty repetitive, too. Oh, it moves settings, and employs various food items, but by the second or third time the "silky tip of his tongue teased her lips" I was thinking, "Huh, this sounds familiar." And I completely lost respect for the author during a scene that celebrates everything wrong with hypocritical neofeminism. Lina throws a hissy fit and gets Eric in trouble with some big burly guys at the beach. Then when they back off and say they don't want to get involved in a domestic thing, she gives this spitfire little speech: "'A minute ago you were all set to protect me from--from--' She gestured toward Eric. 'But as long as we're married--as long as I 'belong' to him--he can do whatever he wants to me, is that right?"

So...let me get this straight, Princess. You're offended that men won't swoop in to take care of you, because you're a modern independent woman who can take care of herself? Is that right?

There wasn't much about this book that was romantic. Erotic, yes. Romantic, not so much. I just couldn't sympathize with a woman who was all, "Oh no, we can't. It's against my principles!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hot characters and great build up September 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lina knows never mix business with pleasure, its too bad no one told that to the hot, handsome head chef and owner of The Cookhouse. Widower Eric Reid, father to two teenage sons has his work cut out for him. Trying to hold onto his dream, he needs that lucky break. Restaurant reviewer Lina has been secretly reviewing his cuisine while trying hard to keep her hands off.

The problem, that man is as irresistible as his food. Eric hasn't been interested in anyone long enough to pull him away from his kitchen since before his wife died and he wants Lina desperately. Can Lina remain professional and stay away?

First, I wanted to say that the chemistry between these two spark right off the bat. You'd have to feel that tension if you blow up within a few minutes that he's in your face. Second, the secondary characters were memorable and cute, helping bring these two together. I could see Lina's point in keeping away, considering she'd seen first hand what can happen when you mix business with pleasure. I was happy when they both saw the light and allowed their feelings for each other put their concerns about appearances away. Great read, can't wait to read more from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant read November 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book could have made for a nice beach read for me. I liked the written style. And as I read in English which is not my first language, the language is sophisticated enough that I have to search words in a dictionary often. So it was worth the read to me as it was an entertaining and interesting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The good chef April 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I think sometimes love needs to be communicated verbally, emotional and pretty much clear as glass. If not you will end like Pamela's two characters. Realizing you care about some one deeply and being afraid of the outcome makes assumptions.

I love the vulnerability of the character, both being hurt emotionally by the ones they once loved. This has made them feel guarded but also has the characters bound by sexual frustration which was unleash unexpectedly.

Really loved this Book. If you into sex and a good story line, it's a must read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor ending September 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The romance of the book wasn't up to what I had expected. No deep connection or character build-up. The ending was poor and quick. Really wanted to like this book, but didn't live up to my expectations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Steamy and Super June 11, 2013

This book was pretty good. I enjoyed reading it and loved the characters. I still can't believe the gall of Steve, I mean REALLY! Jeez. I loved Joy, super friend. I loved the boys. There were some really juicy steamy scenes too. Definitely kept the blood pumping. And the plot was good too. The boat scene was good too. Definitely a keeper after that. Wishes I could have met the clan but the book was still good. This would be great for cuddling-up, relaxing or just something not too straining or nail biting to read. Enjoy!

Great characters that are so cute together. My only complaint is the use of "big" words that I needed definition for...seemed a bit out of place in this story. Read more
