From Publishers Weekly

Miller's newest crime thriller eschews customary protagonist Winter Massey for FBI Special Agent Alexa Keen, who specializes in resolving high-profile abduction cases. While in New Orleans for a law enforcement seminar, she gets drawn into a case the authorities are desperate to keep quiet: Gary West, the husband of billionaire heiress Casey LePointe, has been kidnapped, without a note or motive. As Alexa navigates a Fed-weary police department, LePointe's reluctant, influential uncle and treachery at every turn, another threat looms: the approaching Hurricane Katrina. Miller digs into the underbelly of New Orleans and the minds of some deeply damaged characters, building tension while Katrina builds in strength. In a genre typified by predictable twists and stereotypical antagonists, Miller's entry is a refreshing change, providing genuine surprises and rich secondary characters. Unfortunately, Alexa is not a particularly original creation, saddled with a straightforward traumatic childhood story to explain her familiar workaholic-with-a-heart-of-stone act, but Miller's work with Alexa's adversaries, as well as the LePointe family, more than makes up for it. Product Description

Alexa Keen is the best the FBI has to offer, a special agent who can achieve the impossible: finding victims of abduction before they can be killed. Casey LePointe West is heiress to one of the greatest fortunes in America. Now, as Hurricane Katrina roars toward New Orleans, these two women are finding common ground in a city of ghosts and grandeur...Alexa as the FBI’s representative in a case guaranteed to destroy careers, and Casey as a woman whose husband has gone missing—and who herself may be the next victim of a brilliant manipulator’s rage.

From the violent wards of an insane asylum to the primordial Louisiana swamps, Alexa is entering the darkest corners of a deadly mystery, peeling back layers of family secrets, hidden relationships, and a twenty-five-year-old crime. And as a raging hurricane gathers strength, she is plunged into a frantic race against time, in the eye of a storm of violence...and just where a ruthless killer wants her to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars In A Word: Outstanding, September 27, 2006
Thank God for writers like John Ramsey Miller. I read a lot of thrillers, and I often lament that the genre has been largely hijacked by franchise names who write the same book over and over. All too often, pacing and high concepts masquerade as real writing--cartoon good guys clash with cartoon bad guys, and there's never a real doubt about who's going to win and who's going to lose. It's all fine as a guilty pleasure, but John Ramsey Miller brings me back to the good old days when reading mattered as much as an art form as it did as a pastime. Mr. Miller writes more than a mere book; he writes an experience. Every character has a heartbeat, every scene a physical weight and a perfectly realized sense of place.

Set in the underbelly of New Orleans and its surrounding bayous, TOO FAR GONE pulses with life. It rings with the kind of truth that can only be experienced first-hand, and can only be brought to the page at the hand of a truly gifted writer. Like every talented artist, Miller does it so well that it looks easy.

TOO FAR GONE offers terrific characters caught in the grip of kidnapping, murder and a deadly storm. Every moment is real enough to touch. The twists are truly surprising and the pacing never lets up. It simply doesn't get better than that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than average thriller, January 3, 2007

Miller writes very exciting and fast paced thrillers, usually with the main character Winter Massey. This book introduces FBI Special Agent Alexa Keen who is caught up in an alleged abduction in the big easy right before hurricane Katrina hits. The plot is fast paced with a lot of action and suspense. Alexa meets some very interesting and deadly characters throughout the investigation. However the last chapter or so seems a bit too contrived and the ending is something of a let down. That is all that can be said without giving away too much. Overall a good thriller/police procedural. I'm sure Alexa will be back.

I have read all of John Ramsey Miller's books, this is the fourth. They are all excellent page turners. This one is no exception.
