5.0 out of 5 stars Rockin' with Rockpile
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Any fan of Dave Edmonds or Nick Lowe or Rockpile (what they called themselves when they toured) must get this album. Carter is a very good singer, the songs are a great blend of rock and country, and the songs are very good. I can't say enough about this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vintage 1978, November 4, 2010
This review is from: Too Many Crooks (Audio CD)
This is an exciting find for fans of 70s rock or just really good rock in general. The rhythms are solid, smooth, very intelligent and a tad funky in a slightly country-ish way that reminded me of early Yes on a few of the tracks, Eagles, Joe Walsh, Grateful Dead even, but only occasionally - overall the bands best tracks are distinct. The first two numbers "Weekend" and "Ferryboat" are hot and if they don't get you on first listen, they will on the second. "No Way Out of Here" is one I'd heard before. "In the Mood" was the original closer and it's a great tune. There's a lot of good tunes even between those that I've come to like more every time I listen it.

The band is tight but the rhythms they create are spacious and they like to change up times within many of the songs. The Japanese edition I have sounds just great. There is no doubt that some of the songs here are sublime although there are a few that may be just very good. By all means though this Unicorn album is well worth a purchase. It's excellent, and I'm beginning to wonder why I didn't give it 5 stars. Oh well, 4 will leave room to be impressed.

There seems to be an extra track on the Japan mini-sleeve edition (11 tracks instead of the ten listed on the sleeve). For another great find of similar era and also in this same mini-sleeve edition check out the excellent Ace album "Five-a-Side" (1974).
