From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5. Secrets play a pivotal role in this mystery. Chad is convinced that summer vacation is going to be a total loss. With his Dad involved with the local summer theater and his best friend, Jeannie, often busy with a babysitting job, there just isn't much for a nine year old to do. Then an elderly neighbor is hospitalized and Chad takes on the responsibility of caring for her dog. When he and Jeannie hear mysterious footsteps in the woman's house, they conclude that an intruder is searching for hidden money. Rather than notify the police, they secretly plan to stand guard and capture the thief themselves. Their activities place them in danger when they have several close encounters with the suspect. In the meantime, Chad's widowed father is keeping secrets, too. He is spending lots of time with an attractive woman and Jeannie has her friend convinced that a wedding is imminent. Concerned that his father is deliberately excluding him, the boy is reluctant to share his involvement in the mystery until it is nearly too late. A suspenseful story that raises some thought-provoking questions about honesty and trust.?Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL

From Kirkus Reviews

Is there a burglar in Miss Beane's house? The elderly woman fell while investigating noises in her home, and is hospitalized. Nine-year-old Chad, who has always wanted a dog, is only too happy to take care of her Labrador retriever, Benson, while she recovers; a neighbor, Mrs. Keck, temporarily adopts Miss Beane's parrot, Baby. While searching Miss Beane's house for Benson's favorite toy, Chad and his friend Jeannie hear sounds and resolve to find out who the burglar is. Baby provides a clue, and Chad decides that the prowler is Cap Colby, an odd, older boy from the neighborhood. After all of the red herrings are disposed of, however, Cap helps Chad and Jeannie apprehend the real burglar. Wright (Haunted Summer, 1996, etc.) offers readers an intriguing mystery, an interesting subplot, and believable characters, but Benson steals every scene he's in. A Kid's Review
This review is from: Too Many Secrets (Library Binding)
This well written mystery will take you through real life issues and surprises. It was a very good book. It was an amazing story because of the characters and how it was written. I loved the way the author Betty Ren Wright made the story real and full of surprises. I also like the way she made it so spooky and real, but she still made it fun. I liked it because you think you know who did something but then it changes. And it has a very surprising ending. I would defintely recommend this story.
The plot is that someone was in the main characters neighbor's house. Chad (main character) and Jeannie (other main character) are determined to find out who the burglar is .without anyone finding out that they are sneaking into her house. But Chad has a problem of his own, he is trying to find out whether his dad is getting married or not.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books that are scary, fun and have surprises. I loved the book and I would definitely recommened this book.

Too Many Secrets

Do you like solving mysteries? Well I do. If you like solving mysteries, this book, by Betty Ren Wright called Too Many Secrets, is for you. This might be a good book for you to read while at school, at home, or maybe anywhere.
There were kids named Chad and Jeannie who were close friends, and a dog name Benson. They had a job which was to take care of Miss Bean's mansion because Miss Bean had an accident while working in her house. Then one night Chad, Jeannie, and Benson went upstairs to go to bed. By the time they were half way up the stairs they heard something in the living room. Then Chad and Jeannie were scared. They didn't want to go down by themselves so they decided to go down together slowly. Then when they got there the pillows were all messed up and that the window was open wide.
(Man! If I was them I would totally freak out. The first thing I would do is to run to the phone shaking and call the cops and hurry back upstairs. I'd look through the window and wait till the cops came.) Chad and Jennie decide to solve the mystery themselves about who the person in Miss Bean's house was.
