Product Description

Too Much Love, Too Much Discipline is a down-to-earth parenting book that differs from all the others by teaching you how to be proactive rather than reactive, by avoiding the abstract and obligatory professional pontifications that critics argue are too vague to work and, instead, provides the exact and specific instructions you need to succeed.

In Too Much Love, Too Much Discipline, a doctor-writer-husband-and-wife team has created an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand, pragmatic approach to parenting. They accomplish this by first teaching parents to understand why the bad behavior is happening and that the behavior is not just a random event (as it turns out, there is more beneath the surface of your child’s tantrums, failures to listen, and other bad behaviors than you might realize). Too Much Love, Too Much Discipline then helps you develop a tailor-made behavior plan that specifically addresses your child’s individual needs.

Yet that’s only the beginning. While achieving behavior change is clearly essential, it is only half of the book’s scope. The book’s unique Five Key Virtues concept, consisting of (1) self-discipline (2) responsibility (3) strong self-esteem (4) frustration tolerance and (5) respect for authority, teaches you how to prepare your child for a lifetime of competence, flexibility, and success in the ‘real world’.

Along the way, Too Much Love, Too Much Discipline also breaks through the confusion of other parenting resources by offering step-by-step instructions to many commonly misunderstood techniques. For instance, parents who have become frustrated with the old standby ‘Time-Out’ would do well to examine how Too Much Love, Too Much Discipline has put new teeth into the Time-Out concept, making it effective each and every time. The book backs its claims of efficacy by teaching you how to chart your child’s behavior and quantify the results.

Whether your child is two or ten, currently in the throes or a behavior problem or well mannered, Too Much Love, Too Much Discipline is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for all parents!, January 13, 2011
This review is from: Too Much Love, Too Much Discipline: The Perfect Mix for Changing Your Defiant Child's Behavior & Restoring Peace & Harmony to Your Life & Family (Kindle Edition)
I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is having a problem with their child (or really, to anyone who has a child). I downloaded it after seeing it recommended on a blog. My 4 yr old daughter has had behavior issues since she started preschool last fall (hitting and- horrors- biting other children, tantrums, etc.). My friends loaned me a few books to try to help, but I found them to be a bit off (one was way too extreme- scary in fact- and the other was too brief), so I figured this was worth a shot since it is only $6.99. I can honestly tell you: save your money with all those other books and just start with this.

I learned so much about why my daughter is acting out, the role that I need to play as the parent, & the qualities that I need to help her build while she's still little. I think many parents say things like "you need to teach your kid boundaries", "you need to teach responsibility", etc., but most don't really know how to do those things (I certainly didn't). This book will tell you exactly how to do it.

There's a great part at the end of chapter 2 that really put it all into perspective for me (it's the part about looking around at the adults in your life and seeing what they lack in terms of self-discipline, responsibility, self-esteem, respecting authority figures, and tolerating frustration). After reading it, I now kind of look at everyone I know within the context of those `five virtues' and always think, "I totally get why you need to do this guy's thing early on."...I certainly don't wait to raise an irresponsible and entitled child who has `drama queen' meltdowns at every turn (I already employ enough of those at my company!)

But the big thing that you will come away with is that it teaches you how to create a behavior plan that will work for your child. I started using the method with my daughter about three & half weeks ago & I am really over-the-moon impressed with the results (so is her teacher). I even have the evidence in her progress charts (read the book & you'll understand about the charts) to show that the changes have been a complete 180 for us. It took some effort and patience on my part (I did try to follow the relaxation things in the book the best that I could) but we did it....The parenting myth chapter at the end of the book is also great- my sister and I have been debating it through e-mail for a few days now...Get this book- it is life changing. Best $6.99 I ever spent!

A picture is worth a thousand words. And in Too Much Love, Too Much Discipline, Ben Boswell does a remarkable job of using pictures, diagrams, and charts along with anecdotes and explanations to outline what parents need do to rear a disciplined, well adjusted child. This book is nothing if not thorough.

I learned a lot while reading it. For one thing, I realized that my kids are pretty good. I wouldn't call them defiant, just genuinely curious. And it helped to read the disclaimer which warned against using Boswell's technique as an end all, be all method with children who have pervasive developmental disorders or issues with violence. Three of my four children fall under the "pervasive developmental disorder" umbrella. Though, to be clear, none of them have severe problems, and many of these methods worked with them. I was particularly impressed with Boswell's detailed token economy, his two pronged system, and the very specific wording of how to issue commands. Reading it made me reevaluate my own parenting, look more closely at my behaviors, and analyze if I was paying off my kids for bad behavior. A must read for parents striving to build a loving and organized home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Love is a great handbook on Parenting., May 4, 2011

This review is from: Too Much Love, Too Much Discipline: The Perfect Mix for Changing Your Defiant Child's Behavior & Restoring Peace & Harmony to Your Life & Family (Kindle Edition)
I'm planning on starting a family and wanted to read up on good parenting techniques before becoming a parent. Since I come from a loving family, I believe I have what it takes to be a good father. However, I wanted to learn more on how to handle children who have tantrums or disobey their parents. Going out in public or spending time with my friends who have kids, I've seen children who are having melt downs and parents who appear helpless in trying to corral their children. I've watched the television show "The Super Nanny" and know it's possible to transform children that are unhappy and defiant to happy and well disciplined children, but wanted more details and strategies for managing children who are defiant. Fortunately, a friend recommended that I read "Too much love..." This book is well written and an excellent handbook on parenting. It focuses mostly on how to effectively manage your child's defiant behavior providing detailed strategies and plans on how to do it. The techniques are easy to understand since they are written in plain language so even the most inexperience parent can benefit from them. After reading this book, I am more confident that I will be a well rounded father knowing how to effectively handle situations where my children misbehave.
