Editorial Reviews

Jerry Jeff Walker was one of the premier country-rock singer/songwriters of the 70's & 80's. We present Too Old To Change & Jerry Jeff together on CD for the first time anywhere in the world. Featured is his unique interpretation of 'Me And Bobby McGee'. These albums were originally issued on Elektra Records in 1978 & 1979.Our previous Jerry Jeff Walker CD, Bein' Free, was a big seller so we expect this to be even bigger. Wounded Bird. 2003.

This CD contains all of the tracks from two very different, excellent Elektra albums by Jerry Jeff, "Too Old To Change" and "Jerry Jeff."

With a cohesive sound, emotional depth and breadth, and primarily quiet artistry, "Too Old To Change" is Jerry Jeff's masterwork as "Pancho and Lefty" is the masterwork of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. The album is primarily acoustic, but the combination of unique arrangements and song tempos and Jerry Jeff's focused, powerful vocal delivery lend each tune a complexity rarely found in acoustic country recordings. The inclusion of a blistering rocker ("Ain't Livin' Long Like This") in the midst of these heartfelt songs sung with mastery, humor, and despair is puzzling until you realize it is another pure expression from Jerry Jeff. The song's inclusion is also contrary and amusing, both qualities familiar to Walker fans.

"Jerry Jeff" flirts with the artistry of "Too Old To Change" with moving songs like "Eastern Avenue River Railway Blues," "Banks of the Old Bandera," and "Comfort and Crazy." But this album contains a broader range of musical styles, including bold rockers ("Lone Wolf," "Bad News"), a Gulf coast love song ("Her Good Lovin' Grace"), even a novelty song ("I'm Not Strange") that is laugh-out-loud funny or, possibly, disgusting, depending on your sensibilities. (Most guys will think it's funny.) The only clunker in the whole bunch is "Boogie Mama," which is lyrically and musically clumsy and sounded outdated even when it came out years ago.

Over the years I have played both of these albums for many different people, and I have never run across anyone who didn't like them. Having them delivered together on one CD is great luck for all Jerry Jeff fans and for anyone interested in uncovering classic outlaw country music. Now all we need is the release of "Contrary to Ordinary," "Reunion," and "Cowjazz," and the world of Jacky Jack music will be right again.

If you are a serious Jerry jeff fan, then you need this one. He's been one of my heroes for 40 years and his new stuff is somehow better. He's got that gentle/rough type of delivery, lyric and style that makes you glad you heard him. Being relegated to the upper Mid West made it difficult to see him in the early 70's. He may or not show up to a gig and when he did he was pretty well lit; but such is life. He probably doesn't do that anymore, but he still cranks out some good ones. Enjoy

You're sitting in your chair when someone mentions lone wolf and you remember the album from many years ago,one of your favorites, special people, ect.so if you're like me you think to yourself,Amazon! I look for the album on and on..over and over.finally it showed up as a mp3 download only.So I looked on Barnes and noble.they had about half of jerry Jeff's album that Amazon had.no fear...I pay for the album once as the mp3 then it's not a bootleg when I burn it on a cd.pretty sure. Let me tell you about the next five minutes.I opened up Amazon Cloud Player and within seconds I was listening to the album.on my phone automatically.on my IPad .on my computer.Amazon has fullfilled these dreams,by having those albums when I'm looking for it. And half the time when you order a cd,you also get a free instant mp3 download.Amazon has vote. Thanks Amazon.last week...I will never be your fool,David Bromberg.
