Biography

Dexy's Midnight Runners are best known in America as one of new wave's ultimate one-hit wonders, thanks to their 1982 number-one smash "Come on Eileen," a distinctive fusion of '80s pop, Celtic folk, and blue-eyed soul. In the U.K., however, they earned a fair amount of critical acclaim, and made a greater impression on the public consciousness with their frequent changes ... In my opinion this is the best album/cd ever made.

I loved rediscovering this CD, which I originally had on Vinyl, and frankly "Come on Eileen" is probably the 5th or 6th best song on the album.

Too-Rye-Ay is one of the most underated CD's of all time. It includes Dexy's greatest hit Come On Eileen. There are many other great songs on this CD as well such as Liars A to E, Jackie Wilson Said, The Celtic Soul Brothers, and Old. All of the songs are well executed and worth the purchase.

In my opinion this is the best album/cd ever made.I have the origional cd and the updated version with the extra tracks.Kevin Rowland was at his best on this classic recording. The songs flow together very smooth as if you were listening to Van Morrison Moondance or Astral Weeks. The Uptempo more resembles Tupelo Honey and Street Choir. If you buy one disc this year you should buy this disc.

Believe me, there's a lot more to this album than Come On Eileen. Although there are a number of less-than-impressive songs, the majority of the album is absolutely scorching, with great tracks like Plan B and Until I Believe In My Soul. The bonus cuts are for the most part non-essential (although some of the live stuff is pretty good), but as a whole the album is well worth owning.

"Too-Rye-Ay" was bandleader/songwriter Kevin Rowlands finest moment in a brief, underappreciated career. His blending of celtic melodies, soul rhythms and pop music manifests itself best in the 1982 hit "Come On Eileen". Though no other track on this disc matches the energy or catchiness of this 80's classic, heartfelt love songs like "Let's Make it Precious" make this more than a one-song album. Covers of Van Morrison's "Jackie Wilson Said" and Aretha Franklin's "Respect" also add soul and a sense of joy to the sessions. A look back at a familiar hit will uncover new and unfamiliar sounds for the first time listener.

In the last three weeks since I bought the disc, I've been kicking myself for not running out and getting the LP back in the early '80s when the album was released. It could have been a crucial component of my musical education. This music bursts with a frantic energy, refined with wit, that I have only heard from one other artist: Jules and the Polar Bears. Each song is a small masterpiece, with the second-to-last track, "Until I Believe In My Soul" being positively transendescent. The hit single "Come On Eileen" sounds even better in context than on the radio!
As for the eight bonus tracks, I'm not sure what to say -- my cup has runneth over already, anyway. The live tracks are fascinating, because they show the band's ability to go beyond note-perfect renditions -- "Come On Eileen" is quite suitably extended. There is also a seven-minute plus version of the Aretha Franklin hit "Respect" which I can easily live without ever hearing again. It doesn't matter -- the original album was worth the import price, frankly!
I intend to acquire every available release of Kevin Rowland's and Dexy's Midnight Runners, based on the quality of this fantastic disc.

I join the crowd in rating this as one of the best CDs ever. There are those who regard "Come On, Eileen" as the greatest track ever recorded by anyone, and both the studio and live versions are here in all their glory. I bought this strictly for "Come On, Eileen" and was surprised at the variety and consistent quality of the songs. Of Kevin Rowland's various incarnations, this was surely him at his best. The music is unique and has a haunting quality that will have you coming back to this again and again. I'm a big fan of the Beatles, Stones, Clash, etc., but I'm prepared to concede that "Come On, Eileen" may actually be the greatest track ever recorded by anyone.

Outstanding!!!! This was one of my favorite bands of the 1980's, and even now, I still love this cd. "Come on Eileen", must be one of the greatest songs of all time. I tell you, I LOVE IT!!! The rest of the music is great also.

I'm not sure of the band members names, except for the lead man, Kevin Rowland. There is a video "live" version of the extended version of "Come On Eileen" on New Wave Hits of the 80's vol.1 VHS. It is "AWESOME", the line-up includes: 3 violin players (including a woman), 1 drummer, 1 keyboard player, 2 saxaphone players, 1 guitar player, and a bass player. So, although the picture in this cd liner notes only shows 5 people, you are actually getting more, at least on the live songs, and especially on the Live Version of "Come On Eileen".

The song set is as follows:
1.The Celtic Soul Brothers
2.Let's Make This Precious
3.All in All
4.Jackie Wilson Said
5.Old
6.Plan B
7.I'll show you
8.Liars A to E
9.Until I believe in my Soul
10.Come on Eileen (original studio version)
11.The Celtic Soul Brothers (U.S.mix)
12.Jackie Wilson said "live:
13.Come on Eileen "LIVE" 7:16 minutes
14.Maguerita Time
15.Respect "live"
16.Dubious
17.Love Part 3
18.T.S.O.P. (The Sound of Philadelpia)

Overall, this is a great one, and I highly recommend it. Thanks!!!!

Everyone knows the 80's anthem "Come on Eileen", however not everybody knows how strong the other songs on this album are. I loved rediscovering this CD, which I originally had on Vinyl, and frankly "Come on Eileen" is probably the 5th or 6th best song on the album. This stands out more if you consider this does not use heavy electronic based sounds like other 80's music; it uses fiddles, and folk-rock fusion. Normally this would not float my boat, but for some reason this album just works.

If you are browsing the song bites, I suggest trying: The Celtic Soul Brothers for its unique sound, Jackie Wilson, and Let's Make this Precious.
