5.0 out of 5 stars A great addition to a flawless CD!, December 31, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Too Rye Aye (Audio CD)
I have the original Dexy's Midnight Runners Too-Rye-Aye album and I have to say, I didn't think it could get any better. However, this special edition version of Too-Rye-Aye with the music videos to Come on Eileen and Celtic Soul Brothers is truly worth the purchase. All of the songs on the CD flow together beautifully.

Not much to add beyond what has been said. Soul, Celtic folk and rock combine to make an excellent listen. The bonus essay and 2nd disc are just icing on the soul cake.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC, SOME DUPLICATES, SOME MISSING, March 2, 2010

first thing is for those of you who already are dexy collectors: the little sticker on the front says this 25th (sheesh) anny edition includes [only] 3 songs not previously on cd. you will have to keep earlier editions for tracks left out of this one.

ASSUMING YOU'RE FAMILIAR WITH THEIR MUSIC AND JUST WANT DATA:

the packaging is the universal records "deluxe edition" standard of a double digipak with a booklet and a clear plastic slipcase. each disc's label uses some dexy iconography, but not original labels, which are reproduced within the booklet. the booklet, happily, provides complete lyrics of the original nine vocal tracks, and a decent essay.

disc 1 has the same ten original Lp tracks as the last "too-rye-aye" 1996 mercury uk reissue 514839-2, except that 1996 reissue has 18 tracks in total, mostly b-sides of the singles.

the new "deluxe" has only 17, leaving off "celtic sound brothers [u.s. mix]" 3:05, "marguerita time" 4:50, live versions of "come on eileen" 7:16 and "jackie wilson said" 2:48. the deluxe adds b-side "let's get this straight from the start", and live from the shaftsbury theatre, london: "old" and "respect."

disc 2 BBC- the "deluxe" edition has 14 tracks that are on windsong wincd047 "bbc radio one live in concert" from 6/6/82
and adds one extra song from that session: "i'll show you." also added is a different bbc session from 4/7/82 with "let's make this precious," "jackie wilson said," "all in all," "old," and then what i think is another b-side, "reminisce (part 1)"

the problem with this edition is not the music, but that as an archival entity (i know, I know: this is marketing, not archiving) there is a total lack of discographical info. the sequencing might be artistic(i only just opened the shrink wrap now) or not, but it is hard to figure out the provenance of many tracks.

i haven't yet listened to compare the audio quality of the various cd and several vinyl editions i own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Between The Grassroots & Madness, August 16, 2005
This review is from: Too Rye Aye (Audio CD)
This album certainly deserves a 5-star and 10+. It's like a cross between Madness & The Grassroots(Madness+The Grassroots=Dexy's Midnight Runners). Chances are that if you like the pop/rock group The Grassroots or Madness, you'll definetly like this album.I liked this album so much, it's one of those cds you have to play more than once. I think Kevin Rowland did a wise thing when he re-recruited his members of the group-especially the violinist Helen O'Hara.
