A Kid's Review
This review is from: Too Young to Die (Paperback)
16 year old Melissa Austin is leading a normal teenage life until she recieves devastating news that she has luekimia,a type of cancer. After being diagnosed her life plans go downhill, she's a top student in all her classes which lead her a spot on the Brain Bowl team as the only junior ever. While going through chemo she begins losing her long chocolate brown hair which causes her to have to wear a wig and is very heartbreaking for her and her family. This book was defintely a tear jerker for me and I did get in trouble for staying up hours after my bed time to read this book it's just to hard to put down.I highly recommend this book and all the other books in her series to everyone.

Too Young to Die,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Too Young to Die (School & Library Binding)
Too Young to DieBy: Lurlene McDaniel Reviewed by: J.Ku Period: 1 Melissa Austin is 16 years old. One day she was perfectly fine, the next day she had bruises all over her legs. She was constantly getting tired. She was one of the smartest students in high school. Her teachers encouraged her to try out for the Brain Bowl. Without a surprise, she made it onto the team. When her parents took her to the doctor to check out her bruises, the doctor said that Melissa¡¦s red blood count were low and her white blood count were high. After that discovery Dr. Pace transferred Melissa to the hospital. In the hospital, they did a bone marrow aspiration on Melissa. The next thing they knew, Melissa was diagnosed with lymphocytic leukemia, a form of cancer. When she was in the hospital after she received the devastating news, a guy named Ric hobbles over to her. Ric told her about what chemotherapy does to your hair, so Melissa had Jory, her best friend, cut her hair for her. When she started chemo, the rest of her hair all fell out. After weeks and weeks of chemo, she finally got into remission. Her life never went back to normal. I really liked this book because it teaches you about friendship, bonding, and friendliness. I learned a lot when I read this book. The friendship between Melissa and Jory got stronger when Melissa was diagnosed with leukemia. Melissa could always trust in her friend. When Melissa was in need for hair, Jory bought the most expensive wig there was. ¡§Jory held a wig, a fall of hair that was rich and black, and incredibly long.¡¨ I disliked this book because reading about Melissa going through chemotherapy made me fell really bad. This book may be fiction, but I still feel really bad that it was her who got cancer and not me. Even if this book may not be true, a lot of it is true in real life. People each day are dying because of cancer. I may not know them, but I feel bad for them. ¡§DeeDee patted her shoulder and handed her a small bowl. ¡¥In case you need to vomit,¡¦ she told her.¡¨ Vomiting during chemo doesn¡¦t sound very good. My favorite part of the book was when the doctor told Melissa that she was in remission. I really like that part because all of the bad events are gone, and now she can try and get on with her life. No more vomiting and chemotherapy treatments. Everything is all better. Life would never be the same like before. Melissa can't go to school without facing a crowd of people. Life would be different from then on.

too young to die,

This review is from: Too Young to Die (Paperback)
Too young to die is a book about a normal girl with not so normal problems. Melissa Austin is 16 years old and is faced with the disease lukemia. Although lukemia is a horribe disease and put her life to a halt, she made the most of it. She was in the hospital alot and was able to meet a life long freind. Melissa is a very quiet person but has very loud ambitions. She was choosen to be in a Brain bowl, witch could open her up to many colleges. She was told about the event right before she was she was told about the lukemia. Insted of asuming she was not going to be able to attend she used her tine in the hospital to study and prepare. I thought it was a very good book. It was very discriptive, and easy to follow. I would recommend it to any one who likes a happy ending.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Too Young to Die (Paperback)
When someone gave me this book in fifth grade, I put it aside and didn't read it right away. Boy was I glad when I finally started reading. It was one of the best books I've ever read. Well, back when I was in fifth grade. I'm in eighth grade now, and I still like this book.Melissa is 16 and starting her junior year, which is looking pretty good. The most popular boy in school has taken an interest in her, and there's a pretty good chance she'll make the brain bowl team (kinda like the math thing in 'mean girls', only math and science). Melissa and her best friend, Jory, are physced. They're about to have a great year! Then Melissa starts finding bruises everywhere, and gets put in the hospital for some tests. The outcome isn't good. Melissa has cancer. Melissa, a perfectly healthy 16 year old, now has cancer. It didn't seem possible. Melissa sees her perfect junior year going right down the drain. The chemo she takes to fight off the cancer leaves her sick, and now the most popular boy in school ignores her. Then she meets Ric. Ric's knows what she's going through. He had half his leg amputted to save his body from cancer. With the help of him, Jory, and her family, Melissa is learning how to cope with cancer. She was so mature for a 16 year old, dealing with cancer. I hope I would have the guts to be as brave as Melissa Austin if I ever got sick like that. There's a sequel to this book, so be sure to read it when you finish this. It's not as good, but it's still worth reading. It focuses more on Jory.

This is a great book! This book is about a girl who lives through high school as a normal girl. She has a normal boyfriend that is one grade older than she is and then she suddenly finds out she has many bruses on her legs and is feeling tired. Her mom takes her to the doctor and he tells her her white blood level is incribly high and her red blood cells are low. He digonosis this diaese as Leukemia, a terrible diease. She learns to make it through High School and the hospital with leakemia. She has to shave off her hair and wear a wig. She feels sad but with her family and her friend Jory, they make her feel stronger and better. She meets this little girl in the hospital that she likes and that girl's name was Rachel. (...). However Jory Got Melissa the most expensive hairpiece and it looked exactly like her orginal hair. Melissa made it into the finals with the Brain Bowl because she is smart. This book is great for both Girls and Boys, and if you like a love story with a happy ending. You gotta check this book out.

Too Young To Die,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Too Young to Die (Paperback)
"The diagnosis is lymphocytic leukemia, Melissa. It's a form of cancer." This book puts you in the place of 16-year-old Melissa. She seemed to be a normal teen, living her life to the fullest. She was beautiful with long, thick, black hair, which would soon be gone. Her best friend, Jory, was always with her, and her all-time crush started to like her! She was even nominated to go out for the Brain Bowl, which was always her dream. Everything was going her way until she was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, leukemia. She couldn't just live anymore; she had to fight for her life. A never-ending battle was going on in her body. Melissa's struggle between life and death really will make you see things from a different point a view.I recommend Too Young to Die by Lurlene McDaniel to any person that wants to know what facing reality can be like. It is hard for people who haven't experienced loss, to understand. McDaniel does a remarkable job clarifying the situation and taking you on a journey through the eyes of Melissa, while battling her cancer. Many people die everyday of cancer, heart disease, and other dreadful causes. Think about how fortunate you are compared to many of these people that don't even know if they are going to be alive tomorrow.

What I thuoght of the Book "too young to die",
By Amanda DeBoer (Minnesota) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Too Young to Die (Paperback)
The book that I read was very good. It had it's strong points. I really like to read books by this author. I like how she puts very relistic words into her writing. I also like how there are funny, sad, happy, and scary parts. It is like a mix of all the emotions. I think that especially this book, along with all her others are a "page-turner". I liked how in this book her(Melissa) friend (Jory) and family was there to help her though everything, and how even though things got rough people stood by her. I enjoyed how she explained how if felt to have to live with cancer. To wake up one morning and feel perfect then the next day have unnkown buruses, cuts that wont stop bleeding and very emotional days. Also, one of my favorite parts is when she met a young girl and they were strong and supported eachother. (...) I think it was just a book on strength and hanging on even though things are really hard. But also, work for what you believe in, even if it takes all you got. It is forsurly a book that I would read again!

Too Young to Die,
This review is from: Too Young to Die (Paperback)
This book is one of Lurlene Mc Daniel's best, with very realistic characters. Melissa Austin is only sixteen years old but she has leaukiema. This book descibes how she faces her future, goes through chemo, and ultimatly achieves remission. I could really identify with Melissa in this story, what she was going through and how it made her feel which made the book much more powerful. As Melissa is fighting her disease her best friend Jory helps her all the way. This book is quite sad, but not as much as its sequel, Goodbye Doesn't Mean Forever. However, I think this is the better of the two. Maybe because the sequel is told more around the point of view of Jory, and I like Melissa better. Anyway, I reccommend this book to anyone.
