This company makes great little all-in-one survival tools.
Jenn
The retention clip on my card bent as I pulled the knife out, making it impossible to put the knife back in the card.
Aaron
The whistle is very loud, the compass works OK if the knife is removed, and everything else works just fine.

I'm a fan of the Tool Logic mini tool kits. They are a sort of Swiss Army Knife in card or money clip form. They are ingenious in design and something anyone, guy or gal, would love as a gift.

The Survival Card is a bit nicer than the standard card in that it has a firestarter. This is a magnesium bar that issues some sparks, even in damp weather, when scraped over dry tinder (to get dry tinder in weather like we had this weekend, you can cut open a soaked dead limb and scrape out, carefully, the dry pith into a soft little ball.)

The tweezers are metal (in my other card, they are resin, not as grabby) and there is also a compass and whistle. The whistle is nice and loud, but the compasse seems to me to be useless unless you remove the serrated blade because the metal will mess it up if it's near the compass.

The red LED is bright enough for close work. Why red? It's a short wavelength and gives better resolution when seeing in the darkness, and the battery is a slim wafer, so a low-energy LED is what you can afford to have available. A maglite torch on your keychain would probably be more helpful to you, but in a pinch, this can help.

All in all, a great little card weighing less than 2 oz and slim as a cracker.

1) Size, durability, contruction: 5
Rock solid construction. No sharp corners. Comfortable in pants or shirt pocket. Same size as a credit card, only thicker. Hole for lanyard useful for those who wish to use it and well within the body for strength.

2) Whistle: 5
As loud as a smoke alarm, requiring just the force of breath used to blow out a match.

3) Knife: 4
Pretty sharp out of the box. Deploys and stows quickly and smoothly with a little practice, but need to be careful not to put back with edge facing up. Has a few indentations on top the blade which work very well with the fire striker strip. If was razor sharp out of the box and both sides ground would give it a 5.

4) Tweezers and toothpick: 4
Tweezers metal, with plastic handle as is toothpick. Stow smoothly and securely. Difficult to pull out only one without pulling out both, so just have to pull both out a little with thumbnail then push the other back in. Otherwise would give this parameter a 5.

5) Compass: 2
Very small diameter. Difficult to know when has found N or is just stuck. Seems needs to be absolutely level for the card to move freely, so best to use on a known level surface like a table top as is very hard to keep level by hand. Would be good if was larger in diameter but then might be thrown off by proximity to the knife.

6) Magnifying glass: 2
Much too small. Have to hold so close to be in focus that the body of the card shadows out most of the light. If used to start something burning could be burned or charred upon combustion of the tinder material.

7) Fire striker strip: 4
Works very well with back of the knife. Makes bright hot sparks. Haven't tried to start kindling with it yet or might give it a 5.

Overall grade: 3.7

With this wafer-thin tool in your pocket you'll always have a knife, a whistle and fire starter. There is no excuse not to have this with you for emergencies not to mention everyday minor cutting tasks. Google "Knives save lives" to find numerous experiences of people alive today because they or someone nearby happened to have a knife to cut them out of a dangerous situation. I bought it to have with me when at church or other "dressed up occasions" where a traditional pocket knife would be frowned upon. I'll probably carry it in addition to a larger blade or multi-tool as a back up. The blade is small but again it's better than nothing and the whistle is plenty loud. The ferrocerium rod is thicker than it looks in the pictures. Make it a habit to always carry something like this, give yourself and others a fighting chance.

I had gotten some of these for my wife and son as part of a small kit for when skiing. I was impressed with the tools and construction I got one for myself. The whistle is nice and loud and the fire starter works well. The weak point is the compass. It doesn't seem to work very consistantly.

I liked the concept and the reviews for this product and was very eager to buy. When I received it I was rather disappointed to find out the compass doesn't work. Though I like the fire starter feature and the emergency whistle, not having a compass makes me rate the product 3 stars.

The compass, tweezers and magnifier are almost useless. The knife is sharpened on one side of the edge. In an extreme situation it would be useful. The knife fits my hand well but the edge is a bit small. Wonderful idea though.

If you're the type of guy who digs stuff like this - survival knives w/a very handy credit card form-factor - you'll love this.

The knife is sharp & useful, the flint works great & it's a good little tool to have.

Note: I did notice that THE COMPASS WON'T WORK IF YOU HAVE THE >METAL< KNIFE INSIDE THE CARD - due to magnetic forces! Take the knife out before using the compass & you'll find it works great too.

RECOMMENDED - makes a great gift :)
