Arlen Roth - master of the telecaster and much more he is definitely! Toolin' Around is powerful and an extremely rich album. His awesome tones and backing band is unbelievable. Each song is excellent in its own way. Even though it is availabilty is extremely hard to get - It is worth going out of your way to pick up an album.

This is definitely a "Masters of the Telecasters" album. The opening cut by the late great Danny Gatton ("Tequilla") is worth the price of the album alone. Arlen smokes on a "Whiter Shade Of Pale". The sound quality is excellent, a superbly engineered album. Buy it.

Arlen Roth may well be the greatest living rock guitarist what with the passing of Roy Buchanon. He is legendary among proffessional musicians both for his teaching and his stellar playing...

A Fine Recording by a Master Guitarist,
This review is from: Toolin Around (Audio CD)
This album is a fine example of a supremely versatile guitarist who can play rockabilly, classic rock, slide guitar, and honky-tonk country with the best of them. Arlen Roth is a model of great taste and great tone, and he has a passion for good music.
This album is a real gem with great songs and great sidemen too. There's not a bad note or a weak song in the batch. It is an album that will find favor with listeners and musicians who enjoy the sounds of the fifties and sixties, interpreted in a fresh and exciting way. Very few electric guitar players are committed to roots music to the extent Arlen Roth is. And Arlen is also one of the finest music instruction authors around. By the way, he is also a fine acoustic guitarist.

Arlen is one of the all-time greatest guitarists, and this CD represents a taste of his unique talents. They say that the waters of White Lake, NY bring greatness, and Arlen's genius is proof of that maxim.

The first track with Danny gatton playing Tequila is reason enough to buy this CD. It is some of his best playing. The rest of the CD is outstanding as well. Many different styles of great guitar.

Stunning Music From Roth and Friends,

Like a lot of players, I've been using many of Arlen Roth's books & videos for years, "Masters of the Telecaster" being one of my all-time favorite books. But until I purchased this album, I hadn't heard much of his playing. All I can say is he's simply one of the most incredible guitarists I've ever heard. While he's definitely a "roots" musician, he defies easy categorization. He incorporates country, blues, r&b, rockabilly and even some swing so effortlessly into his playing that it all blends into one amazing style. Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton, Albert Lee, Brent Mason, Ray Flacke and Steve Travoto are some of the other players who would fall into this all-encompassing, virtuoso Americana-style, (yeah, Flacke & Lee are British...) but they all have their own identities and sounds. But Arlen Roth has a distinctly vocal-style, with some of the best phrasing I've ever heard. His touch is astonishing, and his subtlety will floor even the most accomplished guitarists. To sum up, this album features 2 great vocal tracks, and 10 of the most amazing guitar instrumentals you'll ever hear. If you love country and/or blues, or great musicianship in general, you really need to check this player, and this album out!

What a fantastic album! I was first turned on to Arlen Roth by a You Tube video of him and Duane Eddy doing Black Water together. Their two very different styles blend beautifully on that composition. In fact, there's not a bad track on this album, and Arlen Roth's high energy and flawless musicianship are evident on every cut. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford the high CD prices currently posted; however, the MP3 version is a steal at the Amazon price, and the 256K audio fidelity is truly excellent! Do your ears a favor and download this album!

This is a great album with many players and different styles. The first track Tequila with Danny Gatton is worth the price of admission if you are a Danny Gatton fan.
