Book Description

May 14, 2010
God created the family to be a powerful, life-shaping force in the lives of our children to be the place where their potential can be energetically and effectively nourished and cultivated. Sadly, in today s culture, kids and parents alike often treat the home as the spot to recharge their cell phones, change clothes between activities, and crash at night. It's time we moved beyond the status quo and learned to use the tools the Master Gardener has provided for tending our homes and teaching our children. Zan Tyler will help you recognize the signs of potential in each of your children, signs that are easy to miss yet are ripe for cultivation. As you read, you will find exciting ways to enable your kids to establish a godly identity, discover their purpose, develop a biblical worldview, and build leadership and communication skills.

Editorial Reviews

Review

When one of my sons was little, we read about David Livingstone going to Africa with medical aid. My little boy looked up at me, and said, "Maybe I'll start lots of hospitals when I grow up, Mamma." My heart thrilled at the thought of my son the missionary doctor. Not too much later we decided that our son would not be following that path since he grew faint at the sight of blood. But we wondered what would he do? How should we steer him?

Zan Tyler helps parents answer that question in her excellent book, 7 Tools for Cultivating Your Child's Potential,. Tyler's well-thought out and inspiring book gives parents insight into helping point children in the right direction for them. Her chapters on identity, intimacy, purpose, worldview, character, academics, and leadership suggest helpful books and websites, offer apt anecdotes and insightful reasoning, and quote well-chosen scholars.

Though the book is aimed at homeschoolers, Tyler offers principles and insights that can be used by all parents. Especially refreshing is her rejection of "accidental" parenting. Instead she gently teaches intentional parenting. The book is not for parents who want to be consultant-facilitators in their children's lives, but for those who want to fully prepare the children for what God has for them.

Tyler's style is warm and friendly. She includes apt illustrations from her homeschooling background but goes beyond her experience to provide resources from others that she found helpful. The reader does not feel overwhelmed by the "perfect" mother, but rather, Tyler shares her past tears and fears. New homeschoolers will find the book similar to sitting down with a cup of tea at the kitchen table with a learned, homey friend. --Debbie W. 5.0 out of 5 stars We are All Involved September 16, 2006
Format:Paperback
In spite of the unique title of this attractive book, and regardless of your age or station in life, here is a combination life story/practical advice/devotional book which is guaranteed to hold your attention. To give you a taste here are two quotes:

P110 "America has gone from a country that once welcomed God (and His Word) to one where His Word is unwelcome outside the church. When a Christian view of the world prevailed in our society, being able to define worldview was not so important. Now that we live in a society that prefers to view the world apart from God, Christians must educate themselves on what a biblical worldview is and why it's important. As Christian parents, we must commit ourselves to understanding worldview issues for our children's sake because they are confronted daily with peer pressure and a pop culture that are often openly hostile to their values. If we choose to remain ignorant, our children's faith will suffer."

p.119

"We must communicate to our children that each of them, in God's economy, brings important gifts to employ in this world for God's glory and our neighbor's welfare. That is why we work. The engineer, the doctor, the mother, the lawyer, the car mechanic, the writer all serve God by dong their work well--by using their gifts to solve problems and improve the world. This idea of improving the world at every level is what God told Adam and Eve to do in the Garden of Eden."

The end result of reading this lively piece of writing will be that you will get a glimpse of the value of any learning derived from "home" and an appreciation for the involvement of all parents, and grandparents, as they complement whatever style of schooling the children may be having.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome book July 29, 2006
Format:Paperback
This book has it all. I LOVED IT!!! It has helped me realize the areas in my parenting that I can change to help my kids grow to be great adults. It is easy to read, direct and to the point; not alot of complicated stuff that dulls the brain. It is geared to help the homeschooling parent, but will help anyone who wants to cultivate great kids. It will give you perspective to what is really important when it comes to teaching our children. KUDOS TO ZAN TYLER on a book I will read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Encouraging November 9, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Loved this book. I needed some encouraging in my home school and I was not let down. I walked away refreshed and excited about planning another school year. The main part of the book is centered around Ms. Tyler's own personal story of raising her three children and educating them at home. After reading this book I decided I needed to start a book shelf simply for the books I should read every year. This is one of those books that every year I will learn something new from, you simply can't get it all in one setting.

Her story and testimony was inspiring. Their struggle to home school when home school was illegal in the USA was incredible and how they battled for that freedom till they finally won. Truly inspiring!!

If you need a pick me up in your home school I would highly recommend this book!! If you are wondering why you are home schooling or the purpose -- I would recommend this book!!
