Product Description

Why a scant quarter? Quilt designs assume that when the sewing and pressing is done, only 1/4" of fabric is removed from the front of the fabric. Because of thread and fabric thickness, the seam allowance needs to measure slightly less than a quarter inch - hence a scant quarter.

Do you want a perfect quarter inch seam every time? Then use these wonderful strips. I check my position every time I start to sew. I take my presses foot off, put my ruler under my needle, bring the needle down exactly on the quarter inch mark, make sure the ruler is square and lay the purple Q Tool along side the ruler. If you feed your pieces in along the edge of the vinyl strip you will have a perfect quarter inch every time. My piecing has improved dramatically since I started using these strips several years ago. I demo them at guild retreats all the time. The quarter inch feet on machines are not nearly as accurate as this method.

These little vinyl strips are extremely helpful for keeping your seam allowance perfect while sewing. I wish they were just a little firmer, however, when it comes to positioning them: if you're not careful when laying them down, they can warp slightly and give you a bit of an unwanted curve rather than a perfectly straight line. Sometimes it's frustrating, hence the 4 stars rather than 5; but once in place, these are great. Eventually they collect threads and lint under their edges and will no longer adhere, so they need to be replaced. But they seem to "wear" quite a long time. I used to use a piece of electrical tape to do the same thing, but hated the sticky mess it left when it had to be replaced or repositioned; and of course, tape is much flimsier and considerably harder to position correctly. These vinyl strips never leave residue. Great invention!

I was having a lot of difficulty with consistent quarter inch seams when I quilt, so this little strip is a Godsend. I use it on my sewing machine bed and on my larger acrylic auxiliary table. I measured and drew a quarter in line on a cardboard business card, and then lined up my sewing machine needle just one needle's width to the right of the line. I then Lined up my sewing edge vinyl strip and , voila, a scant quarter inch seam guide!

I'm just learning to quilt and that scant 1/4" is pretty elusive. But this stuff solves my problem. I like to use 2 layers of Sewer's Edge Vinyl stacked together so I really have a nice thick guide to push my fabric against. You get 5 strips, and they are repositionable, at least until the adhesive collects too much lint and thread, then no more sticky. But that's because I remove it too often in order to do other types of sewing. If you left it alone, it would probably work forever. I just put a strip of double-sticky tape on it and it works like new. Terrific little product!

This tool makes sewing pieces together much easier and the results are more consistent. Since using it I've noticed that my quilt blocks now end up being the sizes that they're supposed to be; no more wonky seams. It's also useful for the end of a seam where there can be a tendency to go off track. It's also very helpful when sewing dolls and doll clothes because it keeps narrow seams even.

It did help my seam allowances to be straighter and more accurate, but I often switch from a quarter-inch quilt piecing seam to a larger seam for garment sewing and the sticky back fails with switching, of course. But a good help if you stick to one size seam allowance for a while.

Instead of worrying about the seam allowance, worry about how accurate the strip, piece or patch is within the finished block. Because 'what remains' matters more than 'what is taken away' does Place this 'stop' at 2 and a quarter inches from the needle, run your cloth along it and sew (as fast as you want to). - Bam! That is how I liked using this......They are easy to see, make a berm for the cloth to ride against, they stay put and can be removed easily. Pre-cut 2.5 inch strips are not perfectly accurate and not all fabric brands cut the same widths. The strips or pieces I cat are not always perfect, either (I'm human). These make all that not matter because I am watching for what remains, not what's hidden in the seam allowances!
