5.0 out of 5 stars Ocean of Devotion, March 30, 2008

This review is from: Tools for the Soul (Dig) (Audio CD)
Danny Flowers' voice will not earn the title of Mr. Perfect Pitch, but it's filled with deep feeling and keeps the listener's interest. Emmylou Harris provides background vocals on the title track that glows with a positive spiritual message, "First you need an ocean of devotion & a vessel strong enough to take you home & a compass for your heart to show which way to go." "Keep On Livin'" was written by Flowers & Delbert McClinton. The track is a rocking toe tapper with Danny's wild vocals, "When the angels gather 'round to lay this body in the ground, lift my soul & teach me how to fly." "Reason to Try" is a bluesy track that was written in front of a painting of Ray Charles -- and indeed, Danny's vocals bring that classic crooner to mind. "Born to Believe" was co-written with Gary Nicholson and is dedicated to Robert Johnson but has a taste of Jimi Hendrix. Danny's "rocket" electric guitar is the sole instrument that backs Danny's energetic lyric, "Well I was standing at the crossroads in the driving rain; I was searching for shelter from this world of pain; It was through your mercy Lord that I was awakened; You know I felt the power & my soul started shaking." "What Would the Father Say" is a reggae-flavored anti-war track. "Prayer Song" uses Bill Miller's Native American flutes and Emmylou on backing vocals on this sweet melodic Flowers-penned hymn, "And as the radiance of the sun shines its light down on everyone, let there be life." Flowers rocks out on "Ungodly" protesting televangelists who make money off God. Walt Wilkins & Danny wrote "World Enough & Time" as a song of love for his children, "Tomorrow will come quietly as angels wait for you & me & I give the Lord my soul to keep, but my heart I give to you." Flowers wrote "I Was a Burden" as homage to Curtis Mayfield, "I was a burden 'til the Lord laid His hands on me." Andrew Saftel's lovely cover art also is a classy choice for this excellent set. Enjoy!
