1.0 out of 5 stars A Nightmare December 22, 2010
By Don
I have been a customer of this product for over a year now and was completely
satisfied until I upgraded to the 2011 version When I upgraded my
computer went downhill fast. My browsers started becoming sluggish and going to
not responding. Other programs would go unresponsive as well causing my system
to hang numerous times. My sleep mode would constantly be interrupted due to
slow responses of servicing hardware. I could not update my browsers or other
software when needed without getting download errors and when it did download
and I had to restart my computer it would not shutdown properly. I have had to
use the power button numerous times just to shut down my system and restart.
When Spyware Doctor would update automatically and the notification message
would appear my product had been updated the message would not go away. When I
clicked on the message it would hang up my system. I tried updating manually but
when I did it would give me error messages and cause another system hang up.
Thinking I had a virus on my system I contacted HP and had them scan my computer
with there intensive scanner for virus, worms, Trojans spyware and malware and
etc. HP did not find anything but however they did notice that Spyware Doctor was
eating my system resources alive. Now I have no run of the mill computer. I have
a Intel Quad Core processor at 3.00Ghz with 16 Gigs of memory. I am no gamer and
I do not have any software installed except for what I need to do my office work
at home. I am a retired computer programmer and analyst from Duke Med Center so
I know computers. HP suggested I uninstall this product and that was a

1.0 out of 5 stars tHIS HAS GONE DOWNHILL November 2, 2010
I have used this software for many years. I signed up and noticed the next year there was a charge on my credit card. Thing is, it was to 39.99, the full blown price. I let it go but unsubscribed to automatic billing. When time came to resub, I found a deal and it would not install because my old subscription had the old number attached. After waiting and hour on the phone, the guy told me to install and uninstall it two times, and "Uncheck" the part that said "do you want to keep your old subscription number.

Ten it worked, but alas, the next day neither my laptop nor my desktop worked. I tweaked for hours finally uninstalling Spyware Doctor and the laptop was fine.

I did the same to the desktop, which is brand new..less than a month.

I wrote to Spyware doctor and they told me to uninstall all Mcaffee that came with the computer?

I'm asking for a refund Fat chance

Oh by the way

My free Spybot caught 5 trojans that were on the old desktop. So I am wondering what the heck is the use of the thing anyway?

If you download it, please check to be sure your system can handle it, and make sure you do not automatically subscribe because you will pay twice as much as if you go and install it again, Uninstall it and go to program files to make sure you uninstall the whole thing, and reinstall it twice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good at first - then crashes galore February 14, 2011
Verified Purchase
Let me just say that what appears to be a bargain - $13 instead of the retail $39.99 - is not always so.

I installed this on 3 of my home computers - two running Windows 7 64-bit and the other 32-bit. Install, initial scans and updates are quick and painless and then, as you'd expect, it sits in the background protecting you against all the evil-doers out there. But then it starts doing a bit of evil of it's own..

Initial symptoms were "hangs" whilst using Internet Explorer 8, sometimes OK after a few seconds and then a bit longer - resulting in "Not Responding" and then a total system freeze for a minute or longer (CTRL/ALT/DEL did nothing - Task Manager would take a minute or longer to appear). Now a minute is a long time in modern PC terms but it seems like forever when you have just built a super-duper computer with top-of-the line CPU, SSD and shedloads of RAM.

I tried Firefox and Chrome but the same problems occurred (and worse - my first ever BSOD). I don't use all three PCs at the same time - and two were new builds - so it took a while to figure it that it wasn't motherboard or RAM related (many hours spent running Memtest!). At some point - just before the tearing hair out stage - it struck me that the only common element across all three PCs was the PC Tools 2011. Anyway, I disabled the software and all was perfect again.

So, not wanting to have wasted thirteen bucks I thought I'd keep the software on the computers, re-enable it once a week to run a scan, then "shutdown" again. What a mistake - the very next time I ran the program time it completely froze the system and I had to use the physical Reset button. Even then it started up with Windows and froze the system again as soon as I logged on.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good cleaner but VERY straining on a system January 16, 2011
I originally bought Spyware Doctor 2009 to remove some very nasty malware one of my daughters had unknowingly downloaded onto my last system. Avira couldn't get everything cleaned out, so I needed something else. Spyware Doctor was expensive, but it succeeded in removing all the nastiness. However, I saw a continued performance hit on that system, which I attributed to the system's age more than anything else. When I bought my new system last year, I installed Spyware Doctor onto my new computer as well. However, over the last eleven months my performance has done nothing but degrade. Spyware Doctor consistently sucks up 24-25% of my memory even at idle, and it often starts spinning my hard drive up to speed every few seconds, even when it's supposedly doing nothing. When it decides to update, if any other programs are active Spyware Doctor will lock and/or crash the system almost every time. I have to reboot my system at least once and usually two or three times every day while Spyware Doctor is running due it freezing everything, and that's not acceptable.

Before anyone tries to blame my system, I'm running a quadcore Intel i7 930 CPU, Windows 7 64-bit, 6 Gigs of RAM, 850W power supply, a GeForce GTX 285 videocard, and plenty of cooling. My system runs any game I throw at it at full settings online or off, but with Spyware Doctor running it hangs up opening Firefox or starting Winamp. Not what I expect from a program on version 8. I'm uninstalling it and replacing it with Kaspersky.

In terms of cleaning effectiveness, I'd give it 4 stars, but I have to subtract two because it's degraded my system's performance significantly. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a trojan or malware, but it's WAY too much of a resource hog.
