Online education continues to grow exponentially, and the majority of universities now offer online courses. However, the unprecedented explosion of online learning courses has resulted in increased demands for online teachers, and regular classroom teachers are often asked to teach in an online environment. Tools for Successful Online Teaching introduces teachers to the tools of the learning management system (LMS), or the online learning environment. These tools, including chat, threaded discussion, e-mail, surveys, exam builders, and more, are explored to show the strengths and weaknesses of each tool. Multiple examples of objectives and activities are provided to instill a deep understanding, and the reader will gain a long-term ability to create a unique curriculum.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I've had the privilege to teach online for over 9 years now. During this time, I've come to understand that a successful online teacher learns to adapt to new technologies by understanding how the strengths and weaknesses of that tool can either support or hinder achievement of objectives. This book takes an in-depth look at some of the most commonly used tools in today's online classroom, whether you teach in an LMS (such as Blackboard or WebCT), or not. Besides discussing strengths and weaknesses, and strategies for successful use, each chapter provides sample integration activities according to Bloom's taxonomy, as well as a sample lesson plan at the end of each chapter. These are lesson plans from my own online classes--I'm sharing with you the best of what I have to offer. I hope you'll find it useful, educational, and inspiring! As my skills as an online teacher have developed, I firmly believe I am doing some of the best teaching of my life, and my students love their courses. Please don't hesitate to let me know this text works for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource, August 1, 2008
This review is from: The Tools for Successful Online Teaching (Hardcover)
Lisa Dawley's book The Tools for Successful Online Teaching is a valuable resource for online instructors, especially those new to teaching online. I don't usually describe textbooks as enjoyable, but this one was truly enjoyable. Her suggestions, experience, and recommendations were not only beneficial for one of my educational technology graduate classes, I integrated many of her technology and teaching ideas for an online class I currently teach. Students who are required to buy this text for an educational technology or instructional design class won't be disappointed. Dr. Dawley clearly advocates quality instruction for student success. Additionally, in my first professional job interview I was able to use "buzz words" and information I got from the text to answer many ed tech type questions -- and I got the job.
