I ordered a number of books related to online teaching for two classes that I took about distance learning. And this text was the most helpful of the lot.

Valuable resource,
This review is from: The Tools for Successful Online Teaching (Hardcover)
Lisa Dawley's book The Tools for Successful Online Teaching is a valuable resource for online instructors, especially those new to teaching online. I don't usually describe textbooks as enjoyable, but this one was truly enjoyable. Her suggestions, experience, and recommendations were not only beneficial for one of my educational technology graduate classes, I integrated many of her technology and teaching ideas for an online class I currently teach. Students who are required to buy this text for an educational technology or instructional design class won't be disappointed. Dr. Dawley clearly advocates quality instruction for student success. Additionally, in my first professional job interview I was able to use "buzz words" and information I got from the text to answer many ed tech type questions -- and I got the job.

Bought this as a required text for a graduate course in online teaching. It proves to be an excellent resource for contemporary issues related to the ever-increasing world of online education. One text that I will be keeping on my shelf instead of trying to sell back.

Don't judge this book by it's cover...great content still relevant today!,

I must say that this book surprised me. Despite it's cover and cheap print job, there is actually a lot of great, relevant, and timeless content in here. The organization of the content is about how I would have organized the chapters. It is really well written and really well researched. There are really great examples and tips, as well as correlation to Bloom's levels. As for the audience, I felt comfortable reading it from an instructional designer/trainer perspective, but it is basic enough for new online instructors.
The only apparent thing missing is the drop box feature. I'm not sure why they were left out because they are such a flexible and widely used tool. As a side note, I just did some research on the author and she is one kick-ass lady. [...] |
