5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely classic...
Remember when Saturday Night Live was funny? Well, if you don't remember Toonces, then you missed out on some pretty hilarious skits. This particular video is entitled "Toonces and Friends," which kind of urks me because I wanted more of Toonces and less of his friends. However, most of the skits are funny, such as Coach Dobbs, Scruffy the Rat and Abe Lincoln...

2.0 out of 5 stars "Toonces and Friends" Short On Toonces
Toonces and Friends is a big disappointment. I wandered why it wasn't available on DVD, it's because the entire program is only 24 minutes in length. That wouldn't be an issue if those 24 minutes were filled with Toonces sketches from SNL. However, Toonces is in only 3 of the 11 sketches on the videotape... what a waste! The remaining 8 sketches are comprised of material from the late 80's when SNL wasn't very funny.

Toonces was in 10 Saturday Night Live episodes between May 20, 1989 - April 17. The videotape doesn't include 3 of the best Toonces sketches: Toonces & Martians w/ John Goodman, Driving Miss Daisy w/ Quincy Jones, and the funniest of all... Urban Toonces w/ Debra Winger. Don't buy this VHS unless you can get it for $5 or less.

Remember when Saturday Night Live was funny? Well, if you don't remember Toonces, then you missed out on some pretty hilarious skits. This particular video is entitled "Toonces and Friends," which kind of urks me because I wanted more of Toonces and less of his friends. However, most of the skits are funny, such as Coach Dobbs, Scruffy the Rat and Abe Lincoln and His Time Machine. The only one I didn't find funny at all was that bizarre Fugitive Couple skit. It was dumb.

As Steve Martin says, Toonces can drive... just not very well. In every Toonces skit, he winds up driving himself and his passengers over a cliff. Aside from these moments, a comedic gem is when we see Toonces stuck on the hubcap of a moving car.

This is a pretty hard to find tape, so if you can find it, get it. Just know it's of low quality as it was recorded in EP mode (see how much better DVD is?)

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny, January 17, 2002

I love this type of comedy. The type of goofy ideas and cheap shots that were used in the Toonces skits. We lost our copy, and it's worth buying a new one to replace it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I finally found Coach Dobbs!, September 6, 2008
This review is from: Toonces and Friends (The Best of Saturday Night Live) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I finally found Coach Dobbs! I've been trying to remember for 15 years where I had seen a way-above average compilation of "SNL brand" material one foggy prime-time night years ago. The memory of Randy Quaid as Coach Dobbs getting beaned by a baseball over and over again, or Joe Flaherty as Abe Lincoln returning from a trip to the near future in his time machine (Catherine O'Hara as Mary Todd Lincoln:"What about me? Was I there?" Abe:"Yeah...you go nuts." Mary:"Damn!I knew it!!")have made me smile all these years and there lots of other reasons to want this unknown
but VERY funny compilation of skits made to support the then-popular SNL recurring character of Toonces the Cat. Made primarily by Christopher Guest and Robert Smigel, if you like snarky, tongue-in-cheek comic creativity, this half-hour tape is for you--AND ME!

5.0 out of 5 stars He Can Drive, Just Not Very Well..., March 6, 2007
This review is from: Toonces and Friends (The Best of Saturday Night Live) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Quite possibly the funniest video you'll ever watch. Yes, it's a little too heavy on the "and Friends" part (the "Fugitive Couple" skit is not worth watching, and most of the others are there as filler), but the Toonces portions are laugh-out-loud funny. There is one exception to that... the "Scruffy The Rat" skit is every bit as funny as the "Toonces" skits. I actually bought this video just for Scruffy, and then fell in love with Toonces too.
Toonces is without a doubt the funniest imaginary character to grace the screen at SNL. Do you have a friend who never laughs, or who you perhaps secretly suspect of being made of concrete... well fear no more, even they will laugh when they watch Toonces!
The tape quality isn't the best (it is in SP speed, but it was duplicated on a high-speed unit at the factory and that didn't help the picture quality), but it isn't bad.
If this ever comes out on DVD, I'll buy copies of that to use as gifts.
In the meantime, I'm very happy with my VHS version. Toonces rocks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best o' the best, June 28, 1999

This should be required watching for the current, and pathetic, script-writers of SNL. One of the best "not-known" comedy compilations you will ever watch. Classic!

Toonces & friends was so funny! It's a must own!!! Needs to be re-released and in DVD format. I would certainly buy it for myself and for friends. It would make a great stocking stuffer.
