4.0 out of 5 stars Great sounds; Difficult to install October 11, 2012
Verified Purchase
I absolutely love the drum samples in this expansion pack. Even if you aren't into metal, the samples offer much more to your available sonic palette than the stock sounds in Superior Drummer.

Installation was a bear and it is important to install the updates available upon registration before you install the discs as they address some installation issues. I still had to manually copy files from the discs, which sounds difficult but is relatively simple, just time consuming. What ultimately worked for me after installing, uninstalling, reinstalling over and over wasn't working (on Superior Drummer and Metal Foundry) was to install the basic core program directly from the download on the registration screen (use the link intended for folks who purchased a direct download instead of the DVDs, to get them started), then copy the drum samples over (.obw files)from the DVDs. I hope someone reads this and it saves them some time and effort!

I have all the Expansion packs, I'm mainly a "Rock guy" (Pop Rock, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Goth\Shred Rock) and this is by far the BEST kit there is. Aside from the GREAT samples, it gives you the following abilities you can't (as easily) get from the other kits: a BIG-A** Kit!!! It natively supports 5 Toms, Double Bass, and a bunch of cymbals.
Usage wise this makes it way easier to use because you need less X-Drums.
The samples are superb (esp the cymbals and toms) so I find myself only replacing the snare. Sometimes the kick (just for a "mainstream-pop-rock", puffier pillow kick)

It takes a little studying and a significant amount of time to get the most out of ANY Superior Drummer kit. At first I was miffed, because I just wanted to load up and focus on creating drum riffs NOT spend hours trying to get a good sound. But alas, that is what this product is designed for. It is RAW CLAY that must be molded. The good news is like clay, once you spend enough time molding it, you have an EPIC sounding (VERY realistic) kit!! Waaaaaaaaay better than fake-ish, typical out of the box stuff.
Also like clay, since it's MIDI data, you can mold until it's "Good Enough" and then when you get more time, come back and mold\refine some more and it just gets better and better - then you just re-burn your CD replacing your good mix with a better one.

To start, I would HIGHLY recommend exploring all of the "pre-made" sounds: Kits, swappable kit pieces (the black down arrow on the kit piece), and lastly presets (which also alter the sound by using Fx and bussing - adv engineering tricks).

5.0 out of 5 stars Massive Library March 15, 2012
I was expecting something that I'd only be able to really use on metal or heavy rock tracks, but this library comes with a massive selection of drums which can be engineered well to work with multiple genres. I've used it with rap, electronica, and even film scores (it mixes well with percussion sounds). The included presets and midi are very geared towards metal though, so if you are looking for versatility in those departments, I'd look elsewhere. Speaking of presets, I do believe this library has more presets than any other toontrack library, ranging from classic, death, nu, and just about any other kind of metal. In the midi section, there is 22 'songs' from which you can choose various grooves/sections. There are 3 different drummers, in both classic and contemporary metal styles. While the reverb of the room itself is very metal, if you give it a tighter feel by bringing down the ambient tracks, I think it works amazingly well with other genres. The real advantage is the ridiculously large snare and kick selections, with 14 and 12 different options to choose from, respectively. Some of the presets are huge and you can run into issues if trying to load the full kit in the 32 bit mode, but most of the time I do fine. If you aren't good at mixing or using things other than presets, unless you're doing metal, this may not be for you. But if you are up for exploring, engineering, and experimenting, this is a great well rounded set.

I recently purchased Superior Drummer 2.0 and was listening to samples of some expansions just to see if any fit my needs. I have a couple very distinct genre's of music I write, heavy metal and blues. I listened to the samples for this pack on Toontrack's site and was blown away, the drums sounded fantastic mixed in a heavy metal song.

So the first thing to note is this is an add-on pack, it does require Superior Drummer 2.0 (the SDX packs are not backwards compatible with EZDrummer, however the slightly older EZX packs are indeed compatible with SP2.0). Second the sound library is massive, over 300,000 audio files, roughly 35GB for a full install. The drum sounds themselves were much much more than I had hoped for, I was greatly surprised by the overall quality of the sounds and the ease of use.

One thing to note is SP2.0 and these add-on packs, out of the box sound absolutely fantastic, however to get the specific professional sound you may desire, you will still have to have your mixing chops up to par. What these tools essentially leave you with is a very high quality recording of your drums. Keep in mind your playing will affect the final product, if you play like **** the end result will sound like very well recorded ****; these tools won't make you Mike Portnoy, practice will.

That said SP2.0 does have a built in mixer with some great effects you could mix it all right there, or I tend to like bouncing the audio out, and mixing it all as part of the project in my favorite DAW (Reaper). Another last note the kits included here can definitely be used for more than just "gut wrenching metal" music. They have some classic sounding kits that would sound great with many genre's. So listen to the examples on Toontrack's website, listen to samples from YouTube, If it fits your needs I would hands down recommend purchasing this library.
