5.0 out of 5 stars Jazz classical fusion...wow, March 15, 2002

Bolling, while being a beast on jazz piano, is best know for his compositional skills. Listen to this album and you'll know why. Each piece has it's own distinct style, but all have that amazing jazz groove without being pure jazz. In addition, Maurice Andre is considered to be the greatest classical trumpeter of all time, and this album shows off his many skills, from the mellow flugelhorn to his brilliant pic trumpet work, he is a master of all styles. Jazz fans, pianists and trumpeters will love this album, as well as classical buffs looking for something different. Truly great stuff here.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Master album from the absolute Master, March 6, 2004
This review is from: Toot Suite for Trumpet & Jazz Piano (Audio CD)
I bought this album on record when it first came and out and it was never off my system. The playing is superb by all, very tight in the accompaniments. I have over 40 CD recordings of Maurice Andre and this rates as one of his best.
His playing is unsurpassed in my mind he seems to have the right style for everything he plays and his sound is just beautiful. If anyone wants a lesson in trumpet playing listen to this or any of his other brilliant recordings (the Hummel with the Berlin Phil is stunning).

Anyone who loves trumpet, jazz piano, or just plain jazz will love this CD. Composer/pianist Claude Bolling has the ability to write great melodies that you'll find yourself playing over and over in your mind. You just can't have a bad time listening to this CD. Maurice Andre is right on target, giving listeners a good sampling of trumpet colors (C trumpet, Eb trumpet, cornet, piccolo trumpet, flugelhorn). The musicians sound like they are having a great time playing, and they play expertly. Give this one a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific, November 3, 1998
This review is from: Toot Suite for Trumpet & Jazz Piano (Audio CD)
I have owned and played this CD for so long that I must now order another CD. I've worn the original out. The mucic is lilting and full of energy. It should appeal to those who love jazz but, may have a hard time with the modern, more dissonant sounds. This is almost a jazz/classical fusion. Claude Bolling beautifully interprets his own compositions with the inspired help of Maurice Andre on trumpet.

I've always loved Maurice André, who, sadly, is now past his use-by date. Nobody played the wicked little clarino trumpet better than he, nobody could extract such gorgeous, burnished tone from a bit of brass tube. The greatest André crossover is "Trompettissimo", now inexplicably deleted, where the young André performs feats of trumpetting that are scarcely credible. This is not as good, but it is still a bright little record, one of a series of jazz suites by Claude Bolling and his trio with distinguished classical soloists (Yo-Yo Ma, Jean-Pierre Rampal, etc.). They are a bit formulaic, but they do make pleasant listening, with André on trumpet, clarino and flugelhorn. If you want bright, bouncy listening brilliantly played, you should try this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun, October 27, 2010

The precision demonstrated and joy elicited by composer/pianist Claude Bolling and trumpeter extraordinaire Marice Andre is infectious throughout this light, breezy, and all-too-short recording. Listeners of NPR's Diane Rehm show will, of course, recognize a section of the opening track, Allegre. The ever-so-slightly mournful Mystique is a nice counterpoint to the opening track. Throughout the recording, brief though it may be, are both technical accomplishments and tuneful melodies to enjoy. Before you know it, the ride will be over, and you'll wonder where the rest of the album is. Saddened at its brief residence in your consciousness, you might well just hit "play" and listen to it all over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic recording!, September 6, 2011

I played this entire composition on my senior recital. It's quite the chop buster, but I had a blast performing it! Bolling does a wonderful job incorporating baroque elements with jazz styles in this piece of music. It incorporates six different horns across seven movements - none of which are Bb trumpet! Maurice Andre executes every element of this piece wonderfully. All elements of musicality - be they Baroque, Classical, or even Jazz - are so incredibly tasteful. If you're looking for something not-so-standard and want a real challenge of working something up, then get this piece of music. It's great to even perform a couple movements from it! If you're just a fan of listening to good music, old and new, this is a marvelous piece to add to your library!
