3.0 out of 5 stars Tooth Fairy
Everyone said Schwarzenegger was miscast for Kindergarten Cop and yet it is one of the more popular films he made. His comic relief in movies like it and Twins and True Lies showed he had far more talent than he exhibited in movies like Commando [Blu-ray]. I think Dwayne Johnson is showing he is more than an action hero as well. I certainly like his toughness in movies...

Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson dressed up as a fairy has got to be one of the more ridiculous images in recent movie history. That's just one of the things that makes Tooth Fairy hilarious. The movie is filled with witty (and sometimes corny) humor. The plot and character development also feel pretty natural. Indeed, even though the plot device of a boyfriend trying to win the love of his girlfriend's children has been used far too many times, it didn't feel stale.

Meanwhile, the toothfairy "kingdom" or whatever had a great combination of magic and sass. It's set up kind of like MI6 from James Bond - Julie Andrews even acts as the head tooth fairy. At the end of the day, it's kind of like The Santa Clause - but with wings and an attitude.

Nearly all of Dwayne Johnson's movies have been enjoyable, but this is the first time he's shown talent with acting. I've gotta say, he was pretty darn good in Tooth Fairy.

Johnson plays Derek, a professional hockey player with the nickname `The Tooth Fairy' which he was given for knocking out so many teeth on the ice. It's more than annoying in movies like this, where we know the character will eventually become the tooth fairy, and for some reason they feel the need to previously deem him with a strictly on the nose nickname; kind of like Tim Allen's character Scott Calvin having the same initials as Santa Clause, if you will. But I'm not a child, so my point here is irrelevant.

When Derek makes an un-wanted comment to his girlfriend's daughter about the tooth fairy not being real, he is sentenced to two weeks of `tooth fairy duty'. This sounds a little ridiculous, but we both know this film isn't aimed at you or me, but at the little ones. So looking at it from their point of view, it's on level with the plot of a great film like The Godfather or Saving Private Ryan, in comparison.

Derek's girlfriend is played by Ashley Judd and the harbinger of Derek's two weeks of doom, is a head fairy of sorts, played by Julie Andrews. There are plenty of humorous shenanigans to be had with Derek trying to cover up the fact that he is a tooth fairy, between his girlfriend and her two kids; which is to be expected.

While in `fairy land', Derek is met by a kind of Q character from the James Bond Franchise. His name is Jerry and he is played by none other, than the legendary Billy Crystal. Thank God he's back! Crystal is as enjoyable as ever, while him and Johnson exchange comedic moments back and forth while Derek is being given his fairy `instruments'; dog and cat repellent, magic fairy dust that will shrink you, etc.

Derek is also granted a humorous British side-kick / guardian angel named Tracy (Stephen Merchant). I don't know that I have ever seen this gentleman before, but I'm sure I haven't seen the last of him; he was hilarious. Jerry is a fairy who has been denied his wings and is forced to assist those sentenced to `tooth fairy duty.'

No it's not going to be the best movie of the year; but if you have even a smidgen of a sense of humor, you will at the very least smile.

A Kid's Review
/ Warning - may spoil the ending /

I am eleven years old, and I love to watch movies and the latest one I seen was The Tooth Fairy.

The reason why I like The Tooth Fairy because there is a lot of humor in this movie and the man has to be the tooth fairy for hurting his girlfriend's daughter's dreams, and he has to serve as a tooth fairy for that one reason. He has to learn the ways of being a tooth fairy, and to survive you got to handle the tooth.

It was really good, and I do not know why the critics gave it a C+ because I would have given it an A+. You should see it at least once or twice at the movie theater.

I love the special effects they did in the movie like how they made him look like he was tiny, and when he was on the kids bed about to put the tooth under his pillow it looked so real, and I do not know how they do it but that is how they make it look so real because if you knew how they made everything and that would spoil how they make it.

The movie is about a guy who has to be a tooth fairy and he can not let anyone know and he has to learn the ways and all the gadgets to use like the shrinking paste, invisibility spray, and amnesia dust, and etc. At the end when his time is up being the tooth fairy they have to make him forget he was the tooth fairy and while he was at his girlfriend's son's talent show during the song he asked her to marry him. "Awwwwwwwww."
At the end he learns true character and true heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rock rocks as a fairy., May 27, 2011
This review is from: Tooth Fairy (DVD)
I'm kind of picky about the movies I watch, which is why I don't watch many. I don't like stupid comedy (dumb and dumber is one of these in my opinion). I like it smart with a little good physical comedy thrown in. This movie made me laugh out loud. It's clean and leaves you feeling good. I was never a Dwayne Johnson fan in his "whatever he did before movies" days--but he is really good in the movies I've seen.

I think Dwayne Johnson is showing he is more than an action hero as well. I certainly like his toughness in movies like The Scorpion King [Blu-ray] and The Rundown [Blu-ray]. I have enjoyed everything I have seen him in so far, and although I love his action movies, I am entertained by his comedies as well. Another good one for the family here as he plays a mean hockey player that has to learn to respect peoples dreams including his own. He shows he can be tough but with a softer side as well. His ego takes a bruising and he learns the meaning of team player. Good quality DVD with a standard content. If you enjoyed this catch The Game Plan (Full Screen Edition) and Race to Witch Mountain (Single-Disc Edition).

1.0 out of 5 stars "What If.................", January 30, 2012
This review is from: Tooth Fairy (DVD)
I must have missed something. I considered myself lucky to have laughed a couple of times, otherwise I found myself staring at my TV screen in total disbelief. This was a comedy?

Derek Thompson (Dwayne Johnson) aka, THE tooth fairy, is a washed up hockey player who gets his kicks crushing the dreams, hopes, and aspirations of children. He steals a dollar from his girlfriend's daughter then tells her there's no tooth fairy. Everything has consequences and he soon finds himself on the bad side of the head tooth fairy, Lily (Julie Andrews). His punishment, become a real tooth fairy for two weeks. What follows is a spate of slapstick, tooth jokes, and a whole lot of nastiness on the part of this over-the-hill hockey player.
Dwayne, as Derek, spends most of the film whining, pouting, and shouting while ginning like a psychotic lunatic at the oddest of times. He looked like a maniac. And let's not forget that he got his kicks from knocking out teeth and destroying the dreams of children; things he obviously enjoyed doing. Worse. Every time the audience is led to believe this repugnant idiot finally gets it and is about to be redeemed, he reoffends and does worse. That's a definite pattern of abuse not to be applauded (the fact that it's at the very heart and soul of this film is disturbing. The fact that it's a comedy is even more troubling). That this cretin keeps apologizing after every abuse then does something worse suggests that any form of a relationship with this guy is doomed. And that too is troubling. That this movie became a box office hit................!

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring! Unoriginal! Just plain bad!, December 8, 2011
This review is from: Tooth Fairy (DVD)
I am glad I watched the whole thing on t.v. instead of renting it again. Because I did rent it before but only got through half of it because I got ored with it but I wanted to see the ending and watch the whole thing on t.v. Because SOMETIMES NOT ALWAYS SOMETIMES when a movie is bad I want to know what happens in the end anyway. This wasn't one of The Rocks best movies. Its about a guy named Derek Thompson (played by the Rock) whose concieted and he ruins other peoples dreams. And he blabs to his girlfriends daughter that there is not tooth fairy. Then hes summoned to be a tooth fairy for 2 weeks because of it. I think the plot is unoriginal and its boring and its just plain bad! Why might you ask? Its because it sounds like this movie is copying off a movie that so many of us love called The Santa Clause. You know the one with Tim Allen and he accidently causes Santa Clause to fall off the roof and then he becomes Santa Clause because of it. Lets see a show of hands if you feel the same. Thats what I thought. Not even Julie Andrews could save this movie from being a total bomb. And really Dwayne you wearing a tutu is ridiculous. If you're a fan of The Rock you will hate this movie. If you like family films you will hate this movie. If you have kids, you AND your kids will hate this movie!

4.0 out of 5 stars not what I expected - and that's a good thing, May 18, 2011
This review is from: Tooth Fairy (DVD)
I thought this movie would be so corny that I would have to turn it off after a few minutes, but to my surprise I really liked it! It's genuinely funny and fairly unpredictable. I was very pleasantly surprised. It's actually not just for kids, adults will enjoy this one as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst movie ever?, March 22, 2012
This review is from: Tooth Fairy (DVD)
Ok, Julie Andrews was in this movie - so I can't in good consciousness proclaim it to be the worst movie ever made - but I'm trying hard to see if there are any other redeeming values. Nope, can't think of any. Even my kids were embarrased by how bad it was, and they are pretty easy to please. (ok, to be fair, there were some funny lines ... but certainly not enough to carry this dog to bed.)
