I am a dentist that recommends Biotene toothpaste to those patients that have sensitive mouths, dry mouths, or get canker sores frequently. The paste is a god-send for these folks!

Biotene toothpaste is biocompatible product that will clean your teeth without irritating your oral mucosa. The product that is in most generic toothpastes, sodium lauryl sulfate, is a form of soap, and can cause canker sores and an irritated mouth in some individuals. BIOTENE DOES NOT HAVE SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE. Instead, it has enzymes that help break down plaque and loosen plaque from the teeth. It will not "foam" like other toothpastes, since it has no sodium lauryl sulfate, but don't let this bother you - it will still clean your teeth gently and with low irritation and low abrasivity.

This is a great product and I highly recommend it!

I receive chemotherapy to fight cancer. My dentist told me to use Biotène toothpaste to fight dry mouth which can occur as a side effect of the chemotherapy. I use this toothpaste every day and I can see the obvious advantages of using Biotène toothpaste.

The dentist who writes that Biotène does not "foam" like most toothpastes do is correct. Don't let that bother you. The chemicals in this toothpaste are combined in such a way that brushing with this toothpaste REALLY fights plaque, dry mouth and more. I am very impressed--and the makers of Biotène manage to still make this toothpaste tolerable without any foul taste or "antiseptic" aftertaste. Biotène is the result of pure genius. They were very smart to manufacture this toothpaste to work in the same way that the body uses its natural defenses to fight cavities and gum disease.

Use this before any expiration date stamped on the package or the end of the tube of toothpaste; and if you can catch a sale on this stock up! It's expensive next to the other brands of toothpaste but it's worth every penny you pay for it.

I have had canker sores for over 30 years. Someone told me that it was the sodium lauryl sulfate(SLS), the detergent used in toothpaste to create the foam we're all familiar with. SLS is also used in shampoos, shaving foams and other soaps. Upon researching, I discovered that SLS denatures proteins, i.e. it disolves/destroys/digests proteins. This is one of the reasons it causes canker sores because it destroys the mucus and top cells in your mouth.

So I decided to use this toothpaste with much skepticism as nothing else had worked. To my shocking surprise, the sores I had disappeared within 3 days of using this and I haven't had another canker sore since. I used to get them weekly. I was so skeptical of this being such an easy cure, that I thought it was too easy to be true, so I kept putting it off from trying it thinking that it would not work.

I love this toothpaste, I just hope this company never stops making it simply because they don't sell enough of them. They should advertise the canker sore application more than the "dry mouth" use. They would sell many more if people knew about this. Everyone in my family suffers from canker sores and they have all turned to this toothpaste and are as amazed as I was. Give it a try if you have sores. It will take a few days for any existing sores to heal, so be patient, it really works. Depending on the severity of your sores it could take a few weeks before they heal. Also, stop using any toothpaste with SLS in it. Good luck.

NOTE: Because it doesn't have the SLS foaming detergent, be aware that this toothpaste will not foam in your mouth and is much more liquid as a result of not containing sodium lauryl sulfate. Also, it's less minty than most toothpaste, which is good if you have a sensitive mouth as mint can burn/irritate sores. It's still fighting cavities and killing germs so just give it time and you'll get used to having less foam and mintyness. It's well worth it in the end!!


9/11/2009: UPDATE

OK, I have now been using this toothpaste for 1 year and 3 months, and it continues to impress me even more each day. I haven't had ANY sores/ulcers since I started using this toothpaste, and I have definitely put my mouth to the test. It really is a godsend!

As an example, I used to get extremely painful canker sores/ulcers almost every time I would eat abrasive foods that cut-up and scratch the inside of the mouth, inside cheeks, underneath tongue, and gums, for example, crackers, hard cereals, crusty breads, some fruits, etc. Another source of cankers/ulcers was whenever I would accidentally bite my tongue or inside cheeks.

Just recently I ate a gourmet artisan bread that is VERY crusty but delicious and would always scratch the inside of my mouth severely and cause these sores. Sure enough the bread cut my mouth up like razor blades, and to make matters worse, I bit the inside of my left cheek and bled. It was extremely painful and I was certain that THIS TIME this miracle toothpaste would not succeed in preventing sores, after all I had way too many scratches and cuts inside my mouth. Well, I was stunned the next morning when I woke up and, not only did I NOT have any cankers/ulcers, but my mouth had healed completely.

It then occurred to me that this anti-bacterial toothpaste with its enzymes, low mint, no SLS is working by minimizing the bacterial activity in my mouth, similar to putting a topical antibiotic on a cut and covering it with a band aid - the wounds heal faster. I'm convinced that this is the mechanism by which this toothpaste is preventing 100% of my sores/ulcers, no matter what I throw at it.

For the above reasons and the fact that I haven't had any painful sores and I'm able to enjoy many more foods, I felt compelled to write an update for those who suffer from the same.

I pray that this company NEVER stops making this and, in fact, they should advertise it's anti canker sore/ulcer powers on the package much more than the "dry mouth" marketing. Mouth sores are MUCH MUCH more painful and depressing than dry mouth. Thank you again BIOTECH/BIOTENE for this godsend toothpaste!!!
