I got hooked on Top Chef when I saw a marathon re-run of the entire first season in San Francisco. What a treat to watch the episodes back to back! It was a very strong opening season. The contestants were quite good and fun to watch because most of them were hard-working and likeable. There was entertaining quirky behavior (e.g. Stephen's ties) and irritating personalities were kept to a minimum. It was more about the food (especially in the later episodes) and not about weird TV.

NOTE for Casting Directors: When looking for contestants, only allow for a certain amount of attitude if it is backed up by SIGNIFICANT talent. Don't waste our time with excessively negative behavior - it is truly pointless and not worthwhile entertainment. This was the problem with seasons 2 & 4.

The challenges of Season 3 were the absolute best! Cooking at Le Cirque and the French Culinary Institute was a pleasure to watch. Daniel Boulud and Eric Ripert were notable guest judges and the biting wit of Anthony Bourdain in several appearances added the right amount of spice. The finale in Colorado was brilliant. Season 3 set the bar really high and the show is struggling mightily to live up to those standards and failing miserably with Season 4. Viewers were spoiled because of the top quality of Season 3.

In Season 4, all of the judges and producers CONTINUALLY tell us that these are the best contestants that we have ever seen. They only say that ALL THE TIME so that we might actually believe it. Don't. It's a sad ploy. Negative, whiny, pathetic behavior is a prevalent theme in each episode. What's the strategy? Despised contestants are kept on the show so that the audience will keep watching from week to week until the hated contestant gets booted off.

I've been watching Top Chef from the beginning and always find that the most entertaining episodes focus on the creation of dishes. Sometimes the show focuses too much on clever off the wall challenges which doesn't really show the contestants skills. Season 2 was guilty of this as there were so many short order cook type contests. Season 4 was rocky but for the most part the focus was on the food. I watched the restaurant wars episode with several people that had never seen the show before. They were all fascinated and enjoyed the judges descriptions. Everyone also liked the egg station challenge and learned new terms on how to cook eggs. The show is uneven but overall it is great to see the focus on the food challenges and not personality conflicts. There's of course some of that but in the end the contestants must create something.

Love this show. Some slight problems with the video delivery, though (hung up in the middle of a few episodes--though that may be a cable issue and not a product/streaming issue).

Ick, have watched New York and DC, and in comparison, this was my least favorite. Some really nasty whiner chefs in Chicago. I particularly disliked Lisa, Spike, and Andrew. Lisa was by far the worst and not a very cook either. I hope this is just a fluke. Ick - of course it is a great show and I love the way Tom handles these whiners, but it just gets tedious. I wouldn't waste your money here.

Season 4 is one of my favorite of the series. Richard Blais is a maestro in the kitchen; Dale's firey personality clashing with Lisa is entertaining.

This is another winning season for top chef program. As in season three, this show came off with flair, some arguing, a little backstabbing and winning talented chefs, no matter who went packing. I throughly enjoyed this season as much as season three. What is also nice, that even though these chefs are highly competive and talented, it showed that they can compete and not be totally abrasive in their behavior towards one another. Give this one a try.

When will season 4 be avaliable on amazon?
Freaking-eh! I want to know too. If it is just going to be available for download, I'll not mind this show anymore. Besides, this season really delivered some bad chunks down the cornshooter.
