Editorial Reviews

What happens in Vegas will be delicious. The sixth season of the No. 1 food show on cable, Bravo's Emmy and James Beard Award-winning series returns with Top Chef: Las Vegas. The 17 new chef'testants take on Sin City this season to see if they have what it takes to become Top Chef. Once again returning to the kitchen, cookbook author, actress and host Padma Lakshmi presides over the judge's table alongside head judge Tom Colicchio, renowned culinary figure and chef/owner Craft Restaurants, and judges Gail Simmons, of Food & Wine magazine and Toby Young, food critic and best-selling author of the book How to Lose Friends and Alienate People. Some of the top names in food, movies and entertainment including Wolfgang Puck, Todd English, Natalie Portman, Daniel Boulud, Penn & Teller, Hubert Keller, Laurent Tourondel, Tim Love, Michelle Bernstein, Tyler Florence, Charlie Palmer, Paul Bartolotta, Nigella Lawson and Jerome Bocuse will be featured this season on Top Chef: Las Vegas. Bravo's Top Chef offers a fascinating window into the competitive, pressure-filled environment of world-class cookery and the restaurant business at the highest level. The series features seventeen aspiring chefs who compete for their shot at culinary stardom and the chance to earn the prestigious title of "Top Chef." Each episode holds two challenges for the chefs. The first is a quickfire test of their basic abilities and the second is a more involved elimination challenge designed to test the versatility and inventiveness of the chefs as they take on unique culinary trials such as working with unusual and exotic foods or catering for a range of demanding clients. The challenges not only test their skills in the kitchen, but also uncover if they have the customer service, management and teamwork abilities required of a Top Chef. The competing chefs live and breathe the high-pressure lifestyle that comes with being a master chef and each week someone is asked to go home.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Emmy winner is a must have, October 3, 2010

This review is from: Top Chef: Las Vegas (Season Six) (DVD)
I enjoy many reality shows but once I discovered Top Chef with season 5 it became my total favorite. This year at the Emmys Top Chef won the Emmy for Best Reality Series. A huge honor definitely long overdue. This season - season 6 in Las Vegas - has been on preorder with Amazon for what seems like an eternity. I don't really understand why. I did purchase season 5 New York from them but Top Chef has a special deal with Target and many seasons available on dvd are only available at Target. I purchased this amazing 6th season of Top Chef at Target months age. Those of you endlessly waiting for it on Amazon know that you can get it at your local Target.

This season is definitely a must have for it is the season that earned the show its Emmy. Padma Lakshmi is the perfect hostess as always and head judge Tom Colicchio and judges Gail Simmons of Food and Wine and Toby Young are back with 17 new contestants. Each episode is amazing. There is a quickfire challenge which leads to the elimination challenge and all are creative and display the chefs at their cuilinary best or struggling at their problematic worst. Las Vegas works very well with this show and what I love is you don't need to be a professional chef or know all culinary terms to be interested in this show. I love food and am fully enthralled in the personalities involved but moreso with the skills these chefs possess and can't wait to see what dishes they will come up with. This season we have two brothers as contestants which adds a definite twist. Also the ante really is upped with the creativity of the elimination challenges. The mix of personalities and skills of the chefs is also very well done. Judging is done honestly and fairly and judge's table is a definite show highlight.

I adore Padma, Tom and Gail and by now they seem like family. I watched this season when it aired on tv and am now watching it for the 3rd time on dvd. Many episodes have added footage and to watch it with no commercial breaks adds to the intensity of the ongoing contest as the chefs are voted off one by one. This show will entertain and educate. It is not a reality show that is just a mindless waste of time. It instead uses reality tv to educate all on cooking, competion and we meet the highest caliber chefs as judges and special guests. I think almost anyone would be highly entertained by this very high quality show.

4.0 out of 5 stars Zin City, May 24, 2011

This review is from: Top Chef: Las Vegas (Season Six) (DVD)
Top Chef's sixth season managed to bring together the glitzy campiness of Las Vegas (Eyewitness Travel Guides) and the rural grace of Napa Valley Style. An added twist is having a pair of twin brothers as competitors. The quickfire challenges are great, and the competitors show their awe-inspiring style. It's cooking kicked up several notches. Within the fantasy world of Las Vegas, they bring their culinary dreams to reality. In a city that has simalcrums of ancient Rome&Paris, they bring real food to the plate. The final four go to the Napa&Sonoma Valleys for their competitions. They do street food at Mustards Grill Napa Valley Cookbook--Cindy Pawcyln herself has been on Top Chef Masters. Later, they go to Keane country: go west, young man.(Cyrus restaurant chef & owner Douglas Keane)(Interview): An article from: Art Culinaire in Healdsburg. It's a fun show, and the sixth season is one of the best! Bon appetit!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Season with Two Brothers Head to Head In Competition, April 30, 2010
This review is from: Top Chef: Las Vegas (Season Six) (DVD)
The idea of having two brothers be in the same contest seems crazy at first. However, they are both working chefs and also both grads of the Culinary Institute. They turn out to be stand out competitors the whole way through. There is a third guy, a Southern Chef, who is serious competition for them. Having the two brothers as the lead competitors in this season though does add a human interest angle to this season which will be hard to imitate. They even bring their mother in toward the end to sit in on one of the judgings!

I started watching this show many seasons after watching Project Runway, the same kind of show but about clothing design instead of culinary arts. There is one big difference between Project Runway and this show: chefs are incredibly more generous souls than fashion designers. The prizes on this show for just about everyone who competes come from the generosity of chefs and the rest from food afffiliated companies (for the PR). The end result is that Project Runway seems very miserly by contrast with only the winner ending up with any assets to take home.

I like the creativity of this show. Also, the fact that these chefs rise to food challenges without consulting cookbooks and the like. They take the knowledge they already have and meet the challenge with that. It turns out that there are a few simple areas which separate the wheat from the chaff in this competition: undercooking or overcooking anything is sure cause for elimination. I suspect the criteria on this show for being undercooked or overcooked is well beyond the average person's understanding of that term. This applies to virtually all food too. Next, over or under seasoning food with over salting being the worst offense of those. Finally, getting lost in the intricacy of some dish and its presentation, over and above making sure that it tastes right, can be fatal. Something simpler will win as long as it is cooked perfectly.

I learned a lot watching this show and I am certainly nowhere even close in ability to any of the contestants.
