5.0 out of 5 stars A timeless jazz/vocal album..., March 19, 2005
This review is from: Top Drawer (Audio CD)
I must admit I have this on lp, and prefer it in that format(I'm only 28 yrs. old too!), there is just such a warmer tone on lp, especially when listening to the warmest voice in jazz, backed by the coolest pianist. But whatever format you prefer this is a classic jazz/vocal album with Torme's smooth vocals swingin' gently atop Shearing's bright piano playing. This album is sizzling hot, especially the opener "Shine on Your Shoes", the whole album is steamin' even the ballads are sizzlin'. This pair made a lot of albums together, but this one is the ONLY essential one!!!(though they are all good). For those of us who hunt thrift shops in search of George Shearing Quintet albums like "Mood Latino" and "Latin Escapade", there isn't much afro-cuban jazz here, and it's neat to hear Shearing just plain swingin' on the keys. These two guys have a mutual admiration for each others artistry, and it is apparent on this awesome cd/lp!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stylish, Powerful Voice and Piano, July 10, 2000

This is the only studio date which has joined Tormé and Shearing within their long series for Concord Records. Beyond category. Delicious "Hi Fly" composed by Randy Weston with lyrics by singer Abbey Lincoln sung by Tormé backed by piano and bass background: great!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite, May 20, 2010

I first owned this on cassette, now on CD. It's been listened to at least several hundred times. The collaboration between these three gentlemen makes this one of the classiest albums I've ever heard. From Shearing slipping in Chopin references, to trading crazy licks with the Bass to Mel's outstanding velvety voice and hip scat singing, you may find that this becomes your favorite too. "Auf Wedersehen" may just be one of the worlds' most beautiful ballads.
