5.0 out of 5 stars A Human on the Internet September 20, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I purchased this book because I had been sending scam emails to Kathleen McMahon for her blog for several years and I wanted to see where things are today. But I must confess the best part of the book for me was reading the 'voice' of a real person talking about these scams and how much she wanted to help people be protected from all these nasty tricks and how much she wants to educate people about scams so that we will never give up any money again. I think it's important to pass this book and its information around to as many people as possible. McMahon clearly describes ten kinds of scams, tells how they work, how they originate, why people do the scamming and how you can protect yourself. She understands the problem from a global perspective because this is not a local problem and she tells us how and why scamming is not going to disappear, so it's better to learn about it. This extremely well-written book is easy to read and leaves you feeling that a caring techno-savvy friend has sat down with you and has talked you out of ever giving one cent or one item of information to a scammer who cares absolutely nothing about you. Bravo Kathleen for helping us all out. It should be required reading for 10-14 year olds and should be presented at community meetings and classes for seniors about the Internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful Read for any one using the Internet September 25, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am a visual artist and online Etsy / Storenvy seller. I often get emails in my inbox stating I have a potential sale in the works (Good News) - But then very quickly - my stomach churns because I think its a scam - or is it? How do you know? Is this opportunity lost? Am I being foolish for having doubts? Does this sound fishy? What do I do? Well I eagerly read this book -Top Ten Internet Scams - to help justify my paranoia and it became clear from page one that there are those who will always take advantage of people and that stealing from artists is sadly, something that happens. In a very clear, concise way, Ms. McMahon maps out the way scammers think and how they prey upon their victims. She gives you the tools and real life scenarios to clearly show you the traps the scammers use to pull you in. Her book is full of examples of close calls from real life people who were lucky enough to google a scammers name and get Ms McMahon's Blog instead. Kathleen McMahon is a one woman activist against scammers and her weapon of choice against scammers are her words. Whether you read her books, her blog or follow her on twitter - her advice is current and knowledgeable and a must read if you plan on having a creative art business over the Internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top 10 EMail Scams September 19, 2012
Format:Paperback
Great read! This book Top 10 Email Scams: Detect & Protect Yourself from Online Scams (Volume 1)is well organized, easy to follow, and very interesting. I would recommend it for anyone who has ever used or currently uses e-mail. That's because everyone I know has already received at least one of these "scam" messages-- even I got 3 of these 10 scams. This book is great because it clearly describes how the various scams work and even shows samples of the actual messages.

I especially could relate to the dating scams, since a lot of my women friends have responded to guys on these dating sites-- not always with fabulous results. This book made me more alert & knowledgeable about what questions to ask myself if I ever get another one of these "scam" messages.

Also, if you are really interested in how these scammers operate, read the great glossary at the end. It contains a wealth of scam details that are fascinating if you are interested in stuff like that. I can't wait for the second book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth It September 12, 2012
Format:Paperback
I purchased the paperback. I felt like I knew a little bit about scams, but when I read this book, it really confirmed a lot of things, and went into much more detail than I expected so I feel like I would really be able to a spot an email as a scam sooner now. Not that long ago I clicked on a link in an email I shouldn't have and now I would know not to. I was also surprised at how many different kinds of scams there are.

The book was easy to read, easy to understand, and I loved the red flag clues lists and the actual examples. It helped me to remember important warning signs. I thought it was well worth the money and now I can help others when they aren't sure about their emails.
