Book Description

July 30, 2007
Tighten your G suit and prepare to slip the surly bonds of earth to a purer air and a broader view. This is not your mainstream dehydrated management book. Prepare to enter the poignant human world of an old veteran as he relates principles that propelled him upward through the ranks to power and respect. No head of state or chief executive officer is so high that they can afford to stop learning. No arsenal is so complete that a secret weapon can be discarded. No repertoire is so perfect that it cannot use some spit and polish. Within these pages dwell not perfection but persistence and compassion. You may never soar to the very top, but you can enjoy the journey and unashamedly be able to look yourself in the mirror with contentment when the battle is over.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Top Gun CEO's, Managers and executives are not unlike a fighter pilot flying 700 miles per hour a hundred feet off the ground on the way to a target in enemy territory. That fighter pilot is focused, ready and determined to complete the mission. While he is every inch a professional who makes the complex seem routine, he is never complacent. Radar guided anti aircraft artillery and surface to air missiles have a way of taking some of the romance out of being a fighter pilot. However, onboard warning systems give him indications when a threat approaches.

In this book I share some of my thoughts about becoming a top gun in the corporate, institutional, or government world with integrity and contentment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Every Leader and Manager., September 24, 2007
This review is from: Top Gun Management (Paperback)
This is a book that belongs always close-at-hand to anyone who wishes to manage and lead any organization, be it a major corporation, a volunteer group or even a scout troop. Gene McVay distills the vital essence of his years as a leader in the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard (where he was a prime mover in the massive work of modernizing and re-organizing the Guard, and commanded the $3 billion budgeted multi-national Provisional Wing) into a single volume that lives up to its title in every way. Here you will find, clearly and concisely, the keys to being a Top Gun Manager. I love this book, and recommend it to anyone who is starting or running a company. McVay - a pilot whose experience includes over 50 combat missions in Viet Nam and 7 awards and decorations - and once even a candidate for Governor of Arkansas -shows that the greatest leaders are those who value, praise, reward, and listen to, the people they are responsible for leading. In its way, this book is as rich and suggestive as Sun Tsu's "Art of War," drawing wisdom from the words and actions of great leaders past and present, as well as from the Bible. It will teach you 20 "Top Gun Management Principles" that will help you fulfill your responsibilities in the very best way possible, allowing the people you manage to flourish and your organization to fulfill its mission, no matter how difficult or complex. The author wants nothing less than to teach you how to be "the best of the best", and he completely succeeds! His style is clear, and his words are wise. For example: "Respect the young, aged, weak and strong. During your lifetime, you will have been all of these."

This review is from: Top Gun Management (Paperback)
Gene McVay and I both served in the Arkansas Air National Guard during the same time frame, but in different units. He has nailed it with respect to leadership and its responsibilities. While most managers are not aware of what a 'top gun' really does, Gene has brought it down to the layman's level and written an excellent treatise on management that I have given to my staff to read even if not yet in management.
