2.0 out of 5 stars An Original Soundtrack Album Since Augmented By A Re-Release With Bonus Tracks
When this first came out in 1986 it presented the music featured in the film Top Gun and, with its 10 tracks and non-existent liner notes it was typical of the albums of the early days of the CD format. What you do get in the insert are the lyrics to each tune but nothing else. In later years, as with many of those early-days CDs, it was re-released with many more "bonus"...

2.0 out of 5 stars An Original Soundtrack Album Since Augmented By A Re-Release With Bonus Tracks, July 9, 2011

When this first came out in 1986 it presented the music featured in the film Top Gun and, with its 10 tracks and non-existent liner notes it was typical of the albums of the early days of the CD format. What you do get in the insert are the lyrics to each tune but nothing else. In later years, as with many of those early-days CDs, it was re-released with many more "bonus" tracks.

At the time, it was well-received, giving us four bona-fide hits and tracks cut specifically for the movie, all of which went well in the new vehicle CD players. The hits were Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone (# 2) and Playing With The Boys (# 60), Take My Breath Away by Berlin (# 1), and Heaven In Your Eyes, a # 12 for Loverboy. All the rest were created for the film, with Cheap Trick's Mighty Wings run over the closing credits.

You have to think that Hot Summer Nights by The Miami Sound Machine (Gloria Estefan's group) would also have been a hit single had it been released as such. Also, it would be nice to know something about Marietta, the vocalist on track 9. She obviously never had a hit single, nor do we even know where she originated.

CDs like this without details and minimal tracks are dinosaurs, much like the old 78 rpm albums which usually contained 4 or 5 discs and 8 to 10 tracks before being replaced by 33 1/3 rpm LPs with their 12 to 16 tracks. Seek out the re-issue instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Classic, March 20, 2009

One of the all time best 80's soundtracks. Every song keeps the beat moving and I can picture what part of the movie during which the song is played.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Soundtrack, January 27, 2008
This review is from: Top Gun: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I remember when I watched this movie back when I was 8 or so. I used to have the tape but I literally wore it out from listening to it so much, so I have the CD. I don't have any flight games to play this with unfortunately, so racing games have to do for now. Still, listening to "Danger Zone" while chasing someone down online for 1st adds a bit of determination. I, of course, highly recommend this CD to anyone who is thinking about buying it, or to anyone who's never even heard of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Gun, 1986, September 18, 2007
This review is from: Top Gun: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Great soundtrack! This is one of the best soundtracks of all time and the music is just wonderful. This is rock and pop at its best and the songs just can't be beat. If you enjoy good music from the eighties then you will enjoy this. Check out songs such as "Danger Zone" and "Playing with the Boys", both by Kenny Loggins, as well as "Heaven in Your Eyes" by Loverboy, "Hot Summer Nights" by Miami Sound Machine, "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin, "Mighty Wings" by Cheap Trick, and the beautiful "Top Gun Anthem" by Harold Faltermeyer & Steve Stevens. Don't forget the other songs that are all just as good, such as "Destination Unknown" by Marietta, "Through the Fire" by Larry Greene, and "Lead Me On" by Teena Marie. Every song on this album is a gem, and again one of the best soundtracks of all time. This is worth having in any serious music collection. Excellent music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible CD for an incredible movie!, June 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Top Gun: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Top Gun is by far my most favorite movie. I have every line in that movie memorized. "Take My Breath Away" is my all-time favorite song, I had to have my Grandma buy me a new Top Gun Soundtrack as a Christmas present because I wore out my old one. I took this CD with me on the last day of school, and my geometry class loved it (I don't think my ex-boyfriend did, though, he was in that class and that used to be "our" song). "Take My Breath Away" will be played at my wedding, whether the man I marry likes it or not! Incredible CD for an incredible movie!

Top Gun is jsut one of those soundtracks that takes you back to the 80's. I even brought it to school with me once and they went wild with it. It's upbeat and romantic. "Take My Breath Away" is in fact one of my favorite songs because it justs captures the moment!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Push The Edge of The Envelope With Top Gun, April 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Top Gun: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
The soundtrack to Top Gun, like all other soundtracks to contemporary movies of the 1980s, forms as much a part of the film setting as the filming location does. The Top Gun soundtrack epitomizes the 80s in its style and upbeat approach. From "Danger Zone" to "Take My Breath Away" each song can be connected with memorable scenes in the film, rather than just being a collection of rogue tracks that might have been played for a few seconds. I remember when Top Gun was first released...I was five years old at the time, and I loved every bit of both the film and the soundtrack. I know all the songs by heart, and I've owned the CD soundtrack ever since '87 and I play it whenever I'm driving, working out, or (as someone else here also mentioned) while playing flight sims (glad I'm not the only one who does that).

The slick style and upbeat tunes of this soundtrack is the perfect reminder of the 80s and who we were, what we did, and what we were all about. Too bad the soundtrack doesn't come along with aviator sunglasses.
