This anthology has some unexpectedly moving and funny moments: Casey Stengel's testimony before the U.S. Senate and Phil Rizzuto's Hall of Fame speech are both hilarious; Grantland Rice's ornate, poetic eulogy for The Babe and Michael Paterniti's 20-years-later remembrance of Thurman Munson are both heartbreakers. Yankee racism is less direct and more chilling: an anonymous Yankee scout from 1947 doesn't find anyone in the Negro leagues worthy of a contract. The 1992 article from the Detroit Free Press, about the young, unsigned Kalamazoo kid Derek Jeter, will make readers gasp with joy, and the draft of Howard Bryant's midgame piece, written when he expected the Yanks to win that seventh World Series game in 2002, will have them gasping for different reasons.
