4.0 out of 5 stars Useful info when you have limited time in Seattle
We took a few days off before attending a business meeting in the Seattle area. I wanted a short-and-sweet guidebook that would direct me to the places I most needed to see (expected destinations like Pike Place Market), as well as a few less obvious places to go. Since I couldn't spend very long in town, I wanted something small and portable enough to stuff in my purse...

3.0 out of 5 stars So So Seattle
Seattle is a great cosmopolitan city. The books in this series are usually excellent. This one is sub par, it doesn't do the city justice. It's o.k. if you want info concentrated on one city, but you'll gleen as many insights from the Chamber of Commerce visitor information.

I was disappointed in the book, not the city.

We took a few days off before attending a business meeting in the Seattle area. I wanted a short-and-sweet guidebook that would direct me to the places I most needed to see (expected destinations like Pike Place Market), as well as a few less obvious places to go. Since I couldn't spend very long in town, I wanted something small and portable enough to stuff in my purse. Top 10 Seattle did a good job at this goal.

In addition to the top ten overall spots, and in some cases the top ten at each spot (such as the most important places to see at the aforementioned market), the book covers each of the major neighborhoods, with recommendations in each one. Not all of them are "tourist" spots, either; for instance, it directs you to walk a few blocks off Broadway (where I was staying) to check out the architecture of area homes. That was good advice, and I wouldn't have ventured that way on my own.

Each neighborhood gets restaurant recommendations, too; we relied on it for one or two meals and were generally pleased. There's also shopping recommendations, though I didn't explore them as much.

The book also has very clear maps, which was definitely appreciated, though I'm not sure how helpful they'd be if you go outside their major areas of focus.

Where the book falls down is in the details. Not the info on each site (it's tiny, that's what I wanted) but in logistics. If it's 10am on Sunday, which of these places will be open? Should I go downtown on the off-chance that the museum is open? The book gave me no guidance.

Nonetheless, this was a good book to carry along on a short trip. I'd do it again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Frommer's Day-by-day, August 3, 2011

I couldn't decide between this book and Frommer's Seattle Day by Day guide for our recent trip to Seattle. I ended up buying both, but found the other one to be more useful.

I actually kept the Frommer's guide with me at all times, and I ended up barely using this one.

This Eyewitness guide did seem to have better restaurant recommendations that were more realistic/affordable/normal types of places. In general, though, I found the maps and layout of the Frommer's guide to be much more useful.

I think this book does the job, but if I had to pick just one, I'd definitely recommend the Frommer's instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful for both planning and wandering in Seattle, April 1, 2010

My fiancee and I only had 2 days to spend in Seattle and this book was the key to our success. Before we arrived we used it to pick out the most important areas to hit during our short stay from the overall Top 10 Seattle. Then while we were wandering the city we were able to pull it out to make sure we were hitting the most important sites in each neighborhood. It gives a great food recommendations in each neighborhood since we had no clue where the best breakfast or dinner spots were. The few places we found and loved on our own ended up being in the book as well when we looked afterwards. I would recommend this book to anyone hitting the Seattle area, especially if you are on a tight schedule and want to make sure you are getting the most out of your trip!

I revisited the Seattle area recently in April and this book was very helpful. My sister moved there in January and we used this book to explore. I left it with her because it mentioned places and restaurants that the other guidebooks didn't. We went to one place in the International district and found some great Dim Sum. It was yummy and you could see that a lot of locals go there. It really does hit the top 10 with good maps as well. You may want another more complete guide book, but the maps and recommendations in this one are great.

I LOVE this series! When you are short on time these books get right to the meat of things you should see and do. I was only in Seattle for a few days (and I can't wait to go back) and this book was a life saver. It tells you places to eat and even places to avoid!

Great book...love that they also have bottom ten, something a lot of books unfortunately refuse to do.

This is my 6th or 7th Eyewitness guide. They do a great job. I have not traveled to Seattle yet, but since my best friend just moved there, I wanted to have a heads up.
