5.0 out of 5 stars A fast paced, funny book!, November 3, 2004
This review is from: Top Secret (Hardcover)
When Allen Brewster, a fourth grader, decides to discover human photosynthesis for his school science project, his irritable teacher, Miss Green, calls his idea ridiculous and assigns a lipstick project instead. His parents are kind but unsupportive, but Allen is undeterred, especially when his tender and wise grandfather encourages him to pursue his research. Allen discovers that the biggest difference between hemoglobin and chlorophyll is that the former contains iron while the latter contains magnesium, so he decides to ingest foods that contain high levels of magnesium. He mixes salt water from an aquarium with peanut butter, Coco-Puffs, raw liver, and Mexican refried beans, runs the mixture through a blender, and drinks it. (Kids, don't try this at home!) After tinkering with his formula, he discovers that his skin has turned green, his taste buds have disappeared, he doesn't need to eat, and he craves sunlight. But then Allen faces numerous new obstacles. No one but his grandfather believes that he has discovered human photosynthesis. He gets aphids and starts sprouting roots. His crabby teacher ejects him from class and tells him not to come back until he looks like a normal human being. And once the government confirms that Allen has succeeded in discovering human photosynthesis, his project is classified as top secret, because it is a threat to national security! Will Allen ever be permitted to return to school? What will he do about the science fair? Will his nasty teacher ever get her comeuppance? This fast paced, funny book is very amusing, engaging, and highly recommended for reluctant readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Secret, May 24, 2000

This book is a fantastic book to me. It might be to you, too. It's mainly about a little boy trying to make himself into a photosynthesis plant. He was going to do that project for his school, but his teacher doesn't want him to, so she makes him do it on lip stick. So he does the photosynthesis project anyway. He turns himself into a plant and tells people what he is and they don't believe him. Only his grandpa believed him. So he goes to the news paper company and tells him the story. Then the man that interviewed him believed him. Then he wrote to the president, but the president's vice president took over. The vice told him what the president told him to tell him that was that his project was top secret. Then, the little boy named Allen turned his teacher green. He gave her the stuff to change her back but she didn't want to change back so she threw it away.

5.0 out of 5 stars my favorite, May 30, 2009
This review is from: Top Secret (Paperback)
I have been reading this book aloud to my classes for 20 years! It is so well written and it keeps the students guessing about what will happen next. I met John Gardiner 21 years ago when he came to our school to do a writing workshop assembly.

Top secret is a good book about a boy named Alien who is assigned a science project on lipstick. But he wants to do it on photosynthesis. So he and his grandpa decide to do it on photosynthesis anyway. But something goes terribly wrong he turned himself into a plant. Will he change back? Read top secret and find out.

I liked this book because it has a lot of details like when the book describes Miss Green for example "she was a big women with a large head she also has a deep voice. I recommend this book to readers who like science fiction books.

This book was an extraordinary book about a kid named Allen Brewster. First, he had to go to school. Then his teacher Miss Greene makes her class do a science project for the science fair. Meanwhile Miss Greene makes Allen do it on lipstick because she thinks human photosythesis is imposible even though she has no reason why it's imposible. The next day Allen goes to the library to reasearch on human photosythesis and he discovers the ingredients to turning himself into a plant. He goes home and mixes the ingredients and drinks the formula. Next he wakes up and his skin is green. After that his mom takes him to school and Miss Greene thinks Allen has sray paint on. The they call his mom and Allen can't go back to school until he's not green. His mom said,"he could walk home." When he's walking home he passes by the newspaper building and tells the guy about him being a plant because his parents don't belive him only his grandpop does and he wants to prove to his parents that he is a plant. Now the presedint comes and he is trying to stop world starvation. And Allen's human photosythesis works to stop that. If you want to find out more you have to read TOP SECRET.

This review is from: Top Secret (Paperback)
This book is the best book I have ever read yet being of age 14. I read this book at 9 and i have been looking for it since i read it and moved away from the libraiy that i checked it out of. I love the grandfathers speech on the apple and how some parts are hidden and some parts are right infront of you and that you don't need all the parts to see what it is.. SSo if you are thinking of getting this book Just go ahead and get it it will be the best 10 dallars spent.

I'm twenty-four years old, and I vividly recall reading this book when I was in elementary school. Obviously, it made a lasting impression. I'm pleased to see that the title remains available after so many years (demonstrating the typical endurance of an excellent children's story), and I highly recommend it to any parent who wishes to stimulate his/her child's imagination.
