Babylon Is Falling - Cannabis Cup 2009 - Amsterdam, NL

Illustrating the perfect underground success story, Slightly Stoopid's dual front-men Miles Doughty (Guitar, Bass, Vocals) and Kyle McDonald (Guitar, Bass, Vocals), created their own label, Stoopid Records, in the early 2000’s to avoid signing a record deal and keep their DIY work ethic and freedom. West coast DUB/Rock pioneers later added musicians Ryan ‘RyMo’ Moran ... Read more in Amazon's Slightly Stoopid Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a rhythm you play or a drum that you feel August 15, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Slightly Stoopid released their debut album in 1996 on Brad Nowells Skunk Records, while the band members were still in high school. A lot has changed in their sound since then. Gone are the "punk" songs that have shown up on more than a couple of their albums.
Top Of The World has a lot of tracks, 21 to be exact. Acoustic guitars, horns, and reggae melodies make up the majority of the songs. There are numerous guest appearances, including Angelo Moore of Fishbone, Chali 2na from Jurassic 5, Barrington Levy, G Love, and my personal favorite Angela Hunte, on the sunny "Mona June".
Other standout tracks for me include the heartfelt "Dont Stop", the danceable, swinging "Ska Diddy", and the catchy "Work.
Both covers are fantastic as well. The first being "Serious Man" originally recorded by Donavon. I probably listened to this track about 6 or 7 times the first time I played the album, I definitely think SS improved this song from its original version. The second cover is a pretty straightforward version of Bruce Springsteens "Im On Fire".
The summer of 2012 is coming to end, but theres still warm days ahead and this record will make a perfect soundtrack to those last trips to the beach, or lazy days by the pool, and at 21 tracks and 7.99??...c'mon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just me? September 24, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'd like to start off by saying that I'm thrilled that Slightly Stoopid has a fanbase that's so open-minded and willing to accept change. A lot of bands I'm sure would love to be given the same amount of freedom by their fans.

Slightly Stoopid's music has changed pretty dramatically over the course of their albums. All throughout they've attempted to try new things and create different types of songs, maybe even to a fault; their past CDs have jumped from one style to another so many times, most noticeably on Closer to the Sun, that it was even maybe a little jarring. With their last CD, Chronchitis, Slightly Stoopid moved into a much more decisive direction, creating a CD with a very unified sound, and Top of the World continues in that style.

My problem I guess is that I just don't like this sound nearly as much as the band's past stuff. The 5-star reviews show that many other fans love this, and I'm happy for them, but what can I say? I miss the guitars. As with Chronchitis, we see the regular guitar taking a major backseat to the bass and a horn section, giving a lot of Top of the World a jazzy (and at times very funky) sound to it.

Setting aside my personal preferences, there are times here where this jazzy sound works very well. Rhythm Streets and Top of the World (the title track) are two of the CD's highlights, and both are incredible tracks. Devil's Door, Ur Love, and Just Thinking are other cool and funky tracks that had me grooving out. Mona Lisa (or is it Mona June? Whatever it's actually called) is one of the few on here with a strong guitar presense, and it's a chill "love song," while We Don't Wanna Go is nice, and Marijuana's a fun one. There's also a Bruce Springsteen cover (I'm on Fire) which is very atmospheric and well-done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Stoopid August 14, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This album is through and through the epitome of Slightly Stoopid. The bass is infectious, the beats are fun, and the style varies from song to song to keep you on your feet. Lots of great guest appearances on an overall well-rounded album. Can't wait to see the new songs live at the Unity Tour!
Keep putting out consistently rocking albums and your fans will keep coming back, Stoopid!

3.0 out of 5 stars Maybe it's just me..... August 25, 2012

I love Stoopid but this album was a bit of a disappointment. The songs just arent THAT good. Alot more horns than usual. Closer to the Sun blows this away. That being said, its still better than most of the crap out there. Blaze.

You'd be slightly stupid to find this album less than stellar. Or uptight and in need of the album's message.

Funky, fresh, and chill as hell. Slightly Stoopid does it again with this one. I don't recommend passing this album up if you are a long time fan or new to the genre.
