Book Description

March 13, 2007
Sophomore year, Nicolette Antonovich was dumped two days before prom by the hottest guy at school. As a result, she became the proud owner of one unworn, perfectly magical pink vintage dress. But Nic is determined to put that night behind her for good. She's a junior now— older, wiser, and completely overwhelmed by a new set of problems: (1) The bank's ready to foreclose on her childhood home. (2) Her father's too busy with his "replacement" daughter to care. (3) Her best friend's brother is an eternal thorn in her side. (4) Her best friend isn't exactly the rose attached to that thorn. (5) Rumors are flying around school that could get her kicked off the volleyball team, which would (6) ruin all chances of a college scholarship. (7) She still likes the boy who dumped her in the first place. (8) And what in the world do you do with an unworn prom dress, anyway? Strangely, it's getting to the bottom of this last dilemma that just might hold the answer to all Nic's problems.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up—At the end of sophomore year, Nicolette Antonovich was invited to the junior prom, bought the absolutely perfect dress, and then had the offer rescinded when Rod "Rascal" Pasqual's girlfriend returned to town. Crushed, she half-jokingly comes up with the "Top Ten Uses for an Unworn Prom Dress," giving readers the title of this witty view of teenage life. From this point on, she struggles with the waxing/waning interest of Rascal, and the pitfalls of loving the wrong boy. She eventually realizes that the right boy for her is her best friend's older brother, which creates all types of havoc. Nicolette is a likable, down-to-earth protagonist who is grappling with a lot of issues, and readers will quickly identify with and understand her. Ferraro does a fine job of setting up an interesting plot, funny dialogue and situations, and an engaging lead character.—Emily Garrett, Armstrong Elementary School, Sachse, TX

More About the Author

At seven years-old, my teacher called my parents to say I showed unusual talent in creative writing. They were thrilled, but I was shocked. I couldn't understand how a measure of "good" or "bad" could be put on something that was just plain fun.

Years later, the writing isn't always easy. But even on the bad days, it's still more fun than a grown-up should be allowed. As I've told my friends for years, whether or not my short stories and books are successful, I will have spent my life doing what I loved...and nothing wrong with that, huh?

10 Uses is a real page turner. Tina Ferraro keeps the plot moving at a good pace, and you become really attached to the heroine. She's both fun & tormented. What a combo! Plus, the love interest is adorable.
And it's very "clean teen" which is perfect for some young readers. I liked this book a lot!

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and a Light Read, May 15, 2007
This review is from: Top Ten Uses for an Unworn Prom Dress (Paperback)
Nicolette Antonovich is an average sophmore girl. Her mom and dad are divorced, she plays volleyball and she dreams about the prom. Enter her dream date and long time crush, Rascal.

Lucky for Nic, Rascal's popular girlfriend Kylie has moved out of state. Luckier yet, Rascal has asked Nicolette to his junior prom. She's willing to suffer through anything to find her dream dress, even if it means hiring her best friend's brother to drive her.

Jared is constantly annoying and belittling her. He acts as if he's her big brother. And there's just no way to get rid of him without being rideless forever. Fortunately, hard work pays off and Nic finds her dream dress. It does wonders for her shapeless body. She's never seen such a beautiful dress in her life.

All of a sudden, disaster strikes. Kylie has moved back and is returing to Newport High! Rascal breaks his date with Nicolette, leaving her heartbroken. She was counting on finally making her wildest dreams come true and now it's ruined, all because of Kylie.

So what does one do with an unworn prom dress anyways? Nicolette finds out exactly that while learning a little about love, life and friends on the way.

Much more than the prom is at stake for Nicolette in this novel. After spending the last of her savings on the perfect dress, Nicolette gets stood up by her dream date, Rascal, when his old girlfriend moves back to town. Months later, she's still crushing on Rascal and daydreaming about the junior prom night that never was. But soon she's got bigger things to worry about -- her parents' broken marriage still weighs on her mind, her mom's new career may be hitting a rough patch, her spot as a starter on the volleyball team may be in danger, Rascal's girlfriend still has it in for her, her best friend has been acting distant, and her best friend's brother has suddenly become remarkably cute, if as bossy as ever...

A funny, heartwarming, romantic debut. Can't wait to read Ferraro's next book.
