5.0 out of 5 stars Dixie Chicks On Top of the World
I don't care what anyone says, but the Dixie Chicks rock. And it will be sad if we let their beliefs (or anyone's beliefs) from preventing them from greatest. After saying that, let me just say that this is one of the best live album I have ever heard. A collection of their biggest hits from their previous 3 albums, this cd shines BRIGHTLY. 3.0 out of 5 stars ENERGIZED AND PASSIONATE LIVE PERFORMANCE WITH INSUFFICIENT SEPARATION AND CLARITY
Buying a live cd has its risks. Sometimes a group sounds more passionate and energized on a live cd. Sometimes the vocals and each of the instruments of the group all blend together in what turns out to be a live performance that lacks sufficient separation and clarity. Sometimes both high energy and passion of the musicians and a performmance that lacks sufficient...

After saying that, let me just say that this is one of the best live album I have ever heard. A collection of their biggest hits from their previous 3 albums, this cd shines BRIGHTLY. Not only do these girls ROCK, but you can hear the passion in their voices and the way they play. You can feel the energy of the fans and it really inspires you. This double cd makes you feel like you are at an actual show. Also there are great pics that goes along with this release. I almost missed this cd, because they are not promoting it. Most people don't even know about it. But don't let that prevent you from buying this cd. Can't wait for a new album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Down on the Chicks? Your loss., December 31, 2003
This review is from: Top of the World Tour (Audio CD)
Let me say up front that I approve of the way G.W. Bush is running things and regardless of the pretext, I think we did a very good thing in liberating the Iraqi people. Natalie Maines disagrees and she's proud about disagreeing and I think that's fine too.
We don't have to agree about everything all of the time.
But most people with unbiased ears will agree that the Dixie Chicks are supremely talented. They understand the soul of country music and are able to interpret it in a fresh way that makes it accessible to people like me who never much cared for country. For my money, Natalie has the best voice and command of style and nuance of any woman performing today. (Granted, with competition like Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Madonnna, Whitney Houston and even Shania Twain, that statement seems like damning with faint praise, but nobody else even comes close.)
Live albums are usually a little rough around the edges and this one has a few flat spots, but the highs so far outweigh the lows that those of us who didn't see the Chicks on tour find ourselves wishing we'd gone.
There are a lot of grins and appreciative laughs in this 2-disc set. Natalie has the grit and spunk to tell her critics to go to hell and make them love her for it.
The high point of the 22-song set - for me, at least - is Bob Dylan's "Mississippi," which gets a high-energy, up-tempo reading that makes you forget Dylan's original version on his "Love and Theft" album. It's worth the price of admission all by itself. The other new track, "Am I the Only One," is a powerful piece of music too.
If you've been estranged from the Dixie Chicks because they had an opinion that didn't match yours, you owe it to yourself to: 1. Go read the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, 2. Get over it, and 3. Buy this album.
There's room in the American tent for everyone. That's why the wackos of the world hate us.

Travelin' Soldier is my favorite song by the Dixie Chicks--it reminds me of another song I heard before I ever heard Travelin' Soldier called "Soldier And The Fortune Teller" by the artist "Rhiannon"---Like 'Soldier And The Fortune Teller'....'Travelin' Soldier' is a wonderful bluegrass song with beautiful imagery, outstanding instrumentation...and out of this world vocals...this is by far their best work ! hear it -love it-buy it !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Surprised, February 25, 2004

I'm not a country music fan. Never have been. And admittedly, I bought this CD for purely political reasons, to support Gaines' freedom of speech. But I was blown away. I got chills. I didn't realize how talented these chicks were due to my simple close-mindedness to country music. Shame on me. I enjoy the versatility, attitude and pure musical talent of this collection. Travelin' Soldier hit a little too close to home, as my soldier continues to write that he will be home soon. But I am perked up by beats that I can't help moving to. Anyone who can appreciate raw talent, emotional lyrics, and strong female vocals who don't sing around a note for 10 minutes before they hit it, buy this album. The Chicks haven't left my stereo since I bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dixie Chicks shine again, December 9, 2003

This 2-CD set is perfect for both the diehard Dixie Chick fan (like myself) who wants a couple of discs to keep around with all of their great songs together, and for someone who is new to the Chicks who wants to find out what they're all about. Anyone who thinks these women are not among the most talented musicians out there either doesn't know music very well or is too blinded by political ignorance. The Chicks blend the best elements of country and pop to create a voice and style that is all their own. While I would recommend getting all of their studio albums in addition to this live set, you really can't beat the deal here for getting all of their best songs for $13. And to the reviewer who said that the CD and DVD were too "perfect," I suppose it really can be hard to believe in this day and age of manufactured music "stars" that there are still people out there who can sing in tune on a nightly basis, but the Chicks can and do. That's called being a true professional musician. And of course the sound quality from show to show is going to be excellent. That's what professional sound engineers are for.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Review and an Opinion, May 2, 2006

This album is one of the best live albums that I've heard, whether defined by genre or male/female or single performer vs. group. I think Natalie's voice is an incredible powerhouse voice. I wish I could belt it out like she does!! And the instrumental solos are fantastic. I don't know about you, but I can't play banjo like that. I think the group's on-stage talent proves that they are, in fact, the real thing.

As far as her political opinions are considered, I do agree that GW is an idiot and has run this country into the ground. HOWEVER, people have different opinions and they should allow others to have theirs. It shouldn't matter where or when a person declares those opinions. Natalie voiced what she believed in, and I give her kudos for having the bravery to do that in a country that shuts out ANYTHING that isn't the 'right' opinion. Don't take it out on the MUSIC! Open your minds to understand that there are different people, different opinions that should be taken into account. Please listen to the music with an unbiased ear. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Live and let LIVE, February 15, 2007
This review is from: Top of the World Tour (Audio CD)
The best gauge to hear a performer or a group is live in concert (or a cd of the concert( Think KISS live or KISS UNPLUGGED are great examples of how good live is). A friend gave me a copy of this Dixie Chicks CD as an early birthday gift, after they won the Grammies.

This 2002 concert is a great showcase for the Chicks. Listening to them on this CD, I feel like I am in the middle of the concert in the best seats in the house.

The production quality is great. The chicks are in fine form and this CD concert is a proof that the grammies wins are no fluke.

I want more of their CDS now

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dixie Chicks have made history, July 12, 2004

The Dixie Chicks recording of the Top of the World Tour is truly amazing. This live CD is full of energy and bliss. This CD has easily made the Dixie Chicks my favorite band of all time; this CD puts me in a whole different place every time I listen to it. I can't even describe what this CD does to you, it's just so breathe taking. The music is flawless, the lyrics full of heart and the crowd as energetic as possible. From songs of Dixie Chicks politics like Truth No. 2 to Bob Dylan's cover of Mississippi to the fun of Sin Wagon and Some Days You Gotta Dance, to the emotions of Travellin' Soldier. The Chicks put every great song they've ever sang on these 2 disc set and the result is incredible. Every song is timeless and moving. The Dixie Chicks have made history.

5.0 out of 5 stars THEY AIN'T JUST WHISTLIN' DIXIE, September 18, 2004
By
This review is from: Top of the World Tour (Audio CD)
The Dixie Chicks have made a "gift" to all of the fans of their music . . .and to all who appreciate and love great country/rock music. The Chicks recorded their tour "live", with no embellishments or studio overdubs and produced an album of marvelous pure pristine contemporary/traditional/bluegrass sounds.

This two cdset opens with a rousing, "Goodbye Earl" . . . includes my favorite "There's Your Trouble" and the toe-tapper, "Long Time Gone".
The Chicks performed a most moving rendition of their love lament or a soldier killed in war with, "Travelin' Soldier".

Truth #2 lets us know that e ar going to hear "the truth" no matter how we might not like heaing it come from their mouths. . . and Th Dixie Chicks are not afraid to speak the truth as they see it.

also, "Ready To Run" will keep you on the move with the Dixie Chicks.

This "Live" aalbum is the closestthing to a "Dixie Chicks Greatest Hits" collection . . . but has a magic absent from studio proucions.

If you have all the other Dixie Chicks albums, uy this one too . . . if you never heard The Dixie Chicks, or never bought any of their albums, but this one. You'll thank TheDixie Chicks for recording it . . .and you'll thank yourselffor purchasing it. . . bt most of all, you'll listen to it . . . again and again and again. The DixiChicks . . . they ain't just whistlin' Dixie! :)

This is not new music, it is just great music from the most talented group in the world. If you haven't seen or heard the Dixie Chicks, get this and the dvd version now. If you are already a Chicks fan, you won't be disappointed. Except maybe that eventually you come to the of the disc end and have to start it over again.
