1) Nosferatu (Werner Herzog version) - Moody and atmospheric with a haunting score

2) Black Sunday (directed by Mario Bava) - ground breaking Italian horror from the maestro himself.

3) Frankenstein (original w/Boris Karloff) - Boris Karloff's greatest role in an all time classic

4) Last House on the Left - indiscriminant violence galore

5) Exorcist - Perhaps the scariest movie of all time

6) I Spit on your Grave - more indiscriminant violence in this controversial exploitation flick from the 70's

7) Suspiria - Claustrophic and very visual. Horror meets high art.

8) Irreversible - very difficult to watch with extreme realistic violence and a unique storytelling method

9) The Innocents - Unforgettable and subtly chilling. Still shocking nearly 40 years later.

10) Night of the Demon - A 50's classic

5. Evil Dead
6. The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
7. The Descent

....in no particular order...
1) The Thing(Carpenter) - John Carpenter's masterpiece. Still holds up today, nothing better.
2) Nosferatu(Herzog) - Easily one of the three greatest horror films ever made.
3) Evil Dead Trap - A true Japanese classic.
4) Kairo - One of the scariest ghost stories of all time.
5) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Pt.2 - Amazingly underrated and overlooked classic of the 80's.
6) The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue - If you have never heard of this film check it out. By Jorge Grau.
7) Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things - Often brushed off as lame and second rate Romero rip-off, but is actually masterful in changing tone from semi-comedy to one of the most sinister toned and dread inducing endings I have ever seen.
8) Hardcore Poisoned Eyes - Very evil and misanthropic tone.
9) Dog Soldiers - One of the best werewolf films ever made.
10Tie) Fearless Vampire Killers and Sleepy Hollow - I had to add an 11th title. Both of these evoke a storybook image in my head and both are so beautifully filmed.

I love your picks, and I certainly agree with you. I would take these with me as well (to a desert island). I would also add
Halloween (part I).

 Donna says:
1. the order - priests with attitude fighting the devil.

2. the gift - cate blanchett could carry this all by herself, but she has the able help of giovanni ribisi and hilary swank.

3. copycat - holly hunter and sigourney weaver kick butt, & william mcnamara is tres creepy.

4. the cell - very innovative & immaginative. j-lo does her best to act, vincent d'onofrio steals the show.

5. kiss the girls - the first few pages of the book creeped me out, and the movie was a good follow-up. morgan freeman, need i say more?

6. i loved black sunday. i remember being tense every time i saw it, praying that he would choose the right girl. wasn't the witch one still crispy under her shirt or something?

7. the others, i actually got cold chills when the little boy says there's someone in the room. it was one of very few mystery films that i haven't been able to figure out in the first half hour or so.

8. the serpent and the rainbow - bill pullman says "don't let them bury me, i'm not dead" yowza!

9. underworld - vampires and werewolves dukin it out. and they look good doing it, too.

10. seven - kevin spacey scared the crud out of me in this. too darn scary.

shoot, i forgot to say that i remember the movie frogs. sam elliot was in that. (no doubt that's why i remember it) tobe hooper directed a lot of those type movies back then. maybe he directed this one too. it was hilarious.

I hate narrowing these down to 10. And horror purists may pick some of these choices apart saying a couple of them are more exploitation films really than anything else. Bottom line, they're gory, sick films that nowadays get classified as horror because horror fans are usually the only ones watching 'em.

1. Dawn of the Dead (Romero)

2. Night of the Living Dead (Romero)

3. Demons

4. The Beyond (hard to leave Zombie at home, but if I'm only taking one Fulci film, it's gotta be this one)

5. Cannibal Ferox

6. Island of Death (hey! gotta keep with the Island theme. plus it's twisted exploitation that cracks me up every time I watch it)

7. Suspiria (difficult to pick just one Argento film, it's gotta be either this one or Opera)

8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

9. Near Dark

10. Suicide Club (I need at least one Japanese film in there)

The rest of my free time on the island would be spent crying because I had to leave May, Toolbox Murders (Hooper), Body Melt, Dead Alive, House on the Edge of the Park, Halloween, I Drink Your Blood, Shivers, Ginger Snaps, Dead and Buried, and Waxwork back on the mainland, along with dozens more.

Rather than have to narrow it down to 10, I would threaten to kill whoever was forcing me to go to this desert island unless they let me have 20! and I WOULD, too!
So, in a vague sort of order, I hereby list:
1)Bride of Frankenstein
2)Nosferatu(Werner Herzog, though the silent original is quite ignore undeservedly so)
3)Phantasm
4)The Living Dead Girl
5)The Black Cat(Lugosi and Karloff)
6)Evil Dead 2
7)The Shining(Kubrick's of course)
8)Dracula(with Lugosi, not by any means a great film, but a GREAT performance by a tragic figure who is dear to my heart)
9)The Haunted Palace
10)Fulci's ZOMBIE
11)City of the Dead(AKA Horror Hotel, but this has a bit extra in it)
12)Black Sunday
13)Inferno
14)The Devil Rides Out
15)Castle of the Walking Dead
16) The House on Haunted Hill(the one with Vincent Price, not the one with all the obnoxious people doing too much swearing and not enough dying!)
17)The Omen(I enjoy both versions, but I'll hafta go with the original)
18) Sleepy Hollow
19)The Sentinel
20) The Mummy(with Karloff......."your pardon, I dislike to be touched. It is an...EASTERN prejudice."
would also like to have a clip along that has every instance from "The Old Dark House" where Ernest Thesiger says "Have a potatoe!"
That was rough whittling down to those 20, I hope you're proud of yourself! Really wanted to add "The Fog", "Dracula A.D. 1972", "Tales From the Crypt" (film with Peter Cushing), "Beyond the Darkness" and only about 199 more!

Interesting choice of DELIRIUM, Sammie. It's not my favorite Lamberto offering, but it never fails to entertain.

DEMONS will forever be my favorite L. Bava picture. I once transcribed all of Bobby Rhodes' lines from the film. Seriously.

10 movies isn't nearly enough for an eternity
Just slip an extra disc into each package, and you get 20 horror movies that have it all.

1. From Dusk 'til Dawn - (The trapped feeling ia what does it for me)
2. The People Under the Stairs - (Again Trapped)
3. Masters of Horror: Imprint - (Takashi Miike is the man)
4. Slither - (Thank God for James Gunn)
5. American Psycho - (Hilarious Horror)
6. Pet Cemetary - (Stiil have nightmares about "Zelda")
7. Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight - (Trapped feeling)
8. Mr. Sardonicus - (Best Black & White Horror movie I've ever seen)
9. The Fly - (David Cronenberg's **Just edged out "Shivers"
10. The Shining - (Possibly The most quotable horror movie ever)
11. Hellraiser - (Nothing says love like a ball-peen hammer)
12. Hellraiser 3: Hell on Earth - (Cenobites in action)
13. The Sixth Sense - (Easily the Best Ghost Movie ever)
14. Mermaid in a Manhole - (Japan at it's goriest)
15. Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors - (childhood favorite)
16. Hostel - (on a deserted island, you better have a movie with nudity)
17. Silent Hill - (most faithful cinematic adaption of a video game)
18. Dawn of the Dead (remake) - (the original seems to have lost it's impact with time, and just doesn't seem to cut it anymore)
19. The Hills have Eyes (remake) - (Possibly the most gruesome remake)
20. Murder Set Pieces (Unrated Version) - (more nudity for good measure)

Heh heh heh, "Mr. Sardonicus"....GREAT!!!!! I saw glimpses of it when I was a little kid, and only pretty recently got the excellent DVD. A REAL COOL movie, and a Helluvalotta fun(like most William Castle stuff, "13Ghosts"House on Haunted Hill"The Tingler"........ I agree with you about the remake of "Dawn of the Dead", too. I never liked the original(despite what all the "critics of serious film" tell us about the "important message about modern society"; I just thought it was a dimestore horror film! But I guess I'm no "expert", just someone who has seen more Horror films than is good for humanity!)

4. company of wolves-angela lansbury

6. hellraiser-clive barker's original
7. phantasm-the 1979 original
8. don't look now-not necessarily a horror film per se but plenty creepy
9. rosemary's baby-mia farrow
10. tale of two sisters-unnerving asian film....

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 16, 2007 1:56 PM PDT
Hey Moongrenadine, it was a pretty keen list; I can't endure that "Gothic" very often, however. Just too....something, I can't put it into words! Too antic, maybe? The Coffin Joe films are a bizarre lode of gems, no? Haven't seen the third yet, but the second is WILD(includes a weird hunchback!!!!!) What do you think about comparing the European version of "Black Sabbath" with the American? I find that with Karloff's introduction to the American "Drop of Water" it actually makes it BETTER(because that tricky guy throws you off guard!) That is an ultra-classic; what do you think of "Black Sunday" and "Baron Blood"(the latter of which is often over-looked, but is a Helluva fun movie)?

 Graboidz says:
There are some interesting picks on the list, but I would guess after being on an Island for any length of time, I would want short, 2 word titles so everything is easily memorable, and to help matters all of the flicks would have to start with "The":

1. The Burning - Tom Savini gore effects, I don't care how many Oscars Miramax has won, this was the studio's best flick. Features Jason Alexander of Seinfeld fame, with hair.
2. The Car - Mr. Barbra Streisand James Brolin in an Awesome 70's Hair Helmet.
3. The Fog - Features FOG
4. The Redeemer - This flick features one of the most over the top slashers ever presented, all of the acting is Dinner Theater level, but great! This flick is also known as Class Reunion Massacre.
5. The Boogens - With a title like that, you gotta enjoy the flick about an octopus like creature prowling through an abandoned silver mine.
6. The Prowler - Cool 80's slasher, which actually presents a good mystery as to who the killer is, again Tom Savini does the gore effects.
7. The Thing - Take your pick the Howard Hawkes original or John Carpenter's remake, both are excellent in their own way.
8. The Shining - Cool, Creepy Setting. Nifty Catchphrases. Stephen King and Jack Nicholson.
9. The Stand - More Stephen King, this was a great TV Miniseries, the DVD runs somewhere close to 19 hours long (just kidding), but it's worth the time. Character driven horror, where you find yourself pulling for the good guys, but still cheering on the bad guys.
10. The Spookies - I know, the title sounds like some kiddie flick. It's not. Some kids get stuck in a haunted house, complete with farting mud monsters in the basement.

Okay so there aren't many classics listed here, but it's my Island.
