4.0 out of 5 stars Good Tool
This tool fits a large number of items on my bike. I've used it for derailer and chainring repairs so far. I've checked the tool's fit on various parts and it seems to cover the components except for the larger ones like bottom bracket, headset or pedals.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stick with the Alien II
I've had a standard Alien and received this as a xmas gift after adding it to my wish list since I thought it would be nice to not have to swap the one from one bike to another (and sometimes forget to do so).
I've always been an Alien II fan despite its weight since it provides an inclusive option in a small tool package. Well, until the xs that is.

This tool fits a large number of items on my bike. I've used it for derailer and chainring repairs so far. I've checked the tool's fit on various parts and it seems to cover the components except for the larger ones like bottom bracket, headset or pedals.

While reasonably solid, it would be unrealistic to expect it to replace the tools in my shop-grade toolbox. It's made to go with you when you ride and improve your chances of riding back if something goes wrong.

Other good items to ride with...
-Tire Irons
-patch kit and/or spare tube
-pump

This 17 piece tool is very well thought out. Need to tighten a fender? No problem, split the tool in half and use the closed wrench side to hold the nut while you spin the bolt with the other side. It's a simple/common task that most multi-tools get wrong. And it's not overbuilt with duplicate tools (e.g. two sets of wrenches including a "pedal wrench") like the Alien II.

I pair it with self-extracting crank bolts and a big 8mm wrench and I'm 100% ready to break my bike down for travel. Watch out for the knife tool, you'll need to put this in a checked bag.

Like another reviewer said: this is not a replacement for a shop-grade tool kit, but I feel so much safer on my family outings knowing that this tool is with me.

I tried the tools out for fit on lots of locations and the Alien fits everything on my bike that I would be comfortable repairing in the field. Also, the chain tool that comes with it works like a snap. It comes in a dandy little sheath that makes storage easy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tools good, durability bad, March 2, 2011

The tools on this device are excellent for on the road bicycle repair, and it's small enough to carry in your saddle bag. The down side is that the clip holding the two halves together broke, and the chain tool is a separate doodad. So now I have three pieces floating around. Sooner or later one of the pieces is going to get lost.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stick with the Alien II, January 2, 2011
This review is from: Topeak Alien XS 17-Function Bicycle Tool (Sports)
I've had a standard Alien and received this as a xmas gift after adding it to my wish list since I thought it would be nice to not have to swap the one from one bike to another (and sometimes forget to do so).
I've always been an Alien II fan despite its weight since it provides an inclusive option in a small tool package. Well, until the xs that is.
On first inspection I was wondering how they would work in the chain tool on the smaller model. Simple, make it a dongle. A separate unit that I guess is supposed to fit in the case lose at the bottom.

Problem: Cold, dark, on the road, need a tool. Pull out tool with numb fingers and long gloves on. Open case, pull out tool just to have the chain tool dongle fall out and bounce into the ditch somewhere never to be found again.

Also, I would assume in reaching their XS stature it doesn't provide tire irons (as opposed to the II). So now I have to make sure to carry a set of those as well. Sort of eliminates the advantage of having the xs model, in my opinion.

The XS, on the other hand, is as I would have expected for quality. It's well made and what it does provide is well thought out. I just don't think they need to be attempting to compete with more minimal, lighter weight options that don't provide the functionality that Alien has been known for. There are plenty of those less capable tools to choose from.
