Fragile Plastic Houseing,
By
This review is from: Topeak Hexus 16-Function Bicycle Tool (Sports)
My Topeak Hexus multi-tool broke in my hand under what I would consider to be a reasonable amount of stress. When it broke the plastic housing snapped and the sharp plastic edges cut my hand. I don not recommend this tool because the plastic is not strong enough. I recommend one with a metal housing. Take a look at the customer image that I uploaded.

Just the Best Take Along Bicycle Toolset,

Brilliant. All the Major Hex wrenches, Tire Levers, and a chain tool, all in one lightweight compact package. Oh, that little third hand to hold the chain together during pin installation is especially handy. I have one of these on nearly every bicycle I own.

A great multitool that is compact and light. I keep it in a bag under my seat with a patch kit.The tool has been indispensable for the chain tool, the allen wrenches, and especially the tire levers. If you can get it on sale, it is well worth it and will likely bail you out of trouble sometime in the future

Not sure why but recently my chain broke while on the road. Before that happened I never cared about carrying a chain tool. After that, I don't leave home without one. This tool has everything you need to do on the road repairs and adjustments, including the chain tool. It is very well thought out, sturdy, and easy to use. OK, it is a bit heavy, but that is the trade off you'll need to make if you want to be able to fix most of the problems you may encounter on the road. Topeak makes the lighter version without the chain tool so if weight is an issue, that is a good choice too.

I have been using this tool (although I think it was named something different when it first came out) for over 8 years. With it, I have done countless trail/road side repairs for myself, friends, and even other cyclist I met with mechanical problems. I even fully assembled a new bike for my neighbor using just this tool when I had loaned my toolbox to my brother. Very simply, this tool has everything you will need for just about any repair on the bike, including a fantastic chain tool and built in tire levers. At this price, it is a crazy deal, IMO the best value around.I do have a specific comment regarding the user who wrote a review stating he broke the plastic under what he considers a "reasonable" load and posted his gory picture. The tool casing is not plastic, it is metal. The only plastic part on this tool is the removable tire lever. You sheered the metal, at a reinforced area of the tool. The is no way that happened under "reasonable" force - you would have to be inappropriately using the tool as a pry-bar or trying to break a siezed bolt with too short a lever to accomplish something like that. It is irresponsible and unfair to rate the product poorly because of your own misuse. Amazon should remove that photo.

I am a 20 yr bike mechanics veteran and this is the tool I bring with me on long rides. It is well designed and thoughtfully spec'd. It has every allen I need, including the big 8mm for cranks. If you have a relatively modern bike, this will handle most roadside repairs and adjustments handily. I did break one of the tire levers though. Annoying because it is used in conjunction with the chain tool. The chain tool is an excellent one by itself. Overall, awesome multitool. compact, sleek. A touch heavy compared to the mini mini multitools also out there, but functionally this is as good as having a a bag full of shop tools.

I've had a bike for years and never owned a multi-tool. I didn't ride much and was always with a buddy. Now I'm riding 27 miles round trip as a commuter, alone, and can't have a bike issue that would make me late to get my kids from daycare. This tool has the basics of what you need to get you out of trouble. Any more and you might as well keep it in your garage for serious tune ups. I'm not a competitive biker so the weight isn't even noticeable and the price was very reasonable compared to other ubertools that look like Frankenstein's Swiss Army knife.

I can't think of too many other tools I will ever need for my bike. As an avid amateur rider, this set is all you will need short of a major repair that I would probably take my bike to a shop for anyway. At this low price it is well worth it to have if you will ever be doing any nature riding.

ALMOST AS IMPORTANT AS PLENTY OF WATER!,
By
This review is from: Topeak Hexus 16-Function Bicycle Tool (Sports)
Other than plenty of water, this is one item I will not ride without! While it is heavier than some tools of this ilk, this one has everything and it is so well made! If you need more tools than this little thing provides, then you probably need to have your bike taken in to a repair shop or have it hauled home and do it in the garage. I have yet to have a "road problem" that I was not able to contend with, and I am pretty hard on bikes. I carry mine in my little bike pack behind the seat. I have two bikes, one a hybrid, the other a road bike. I have two of these tools and keep one in the pack of each bike. At the price they are asking for these things, they are affordable and well worth it. Between this tool and a cell phone, there is not much I cannot handle. I am a complete armature rider, but ride a lot. As affordable as these things are, it is rather silly to ride without one.

Multi-function tool that often fails to function,

The tool looks good out of the packaging and has a decent heft. I was initially pleased.First inner-tube change, snap goes one of the flimsy tire levers (see the image I uploaded). Disappointing, but not so big a deal since I have other levers I prefer. Now for a simple chain repair. No problem getting the pin out, but forget about ever getting it back in. There is not enough thread to accommodate the pulled pin, so trying to re-engage the thread while keeping the pin aligned was a real pain. Then, as I finally feel a bit of bite, it turns out the thread is giving way. Now it's worthless until I can re-thread it. I'm glad other folks have had better luck with this tool than I have, but I can't help but warn other buyers about the problems I've encountered. |
