Product Description

With the Topeak PanoBike Blue Tooth Speed/Cadence Sensor, you can turn a smartphone, tablet, or any Bluetooth Smart (BLE 4. 0) device into a personal training and health management device. All you have to do is chose an app (Strava, MapMyRide, Runtastic, Endomondo, ext.) of your liking and sync it with the Blue Tooth Speed/Cadence Sensor. The Bluetooth smart algorithm extends the included CR2032 battery's life to an incredible 1800 hours (approximately five years with an hour a day use). The transmitter is water resistant so light precipitation will not ruin the device. And, it has a transmission range of 33 feet so you can use laptops/desktops/tablets when training indoors, or a handlebar/pocket location while on the bike. The Topeak PanoBike Blue Tooth Speed/Cadence Sensor uses a rubber-band style mount with zip ties to allow quick and easy mounting on chainstays or seatstays without harming the frame.

Topeak's product description should plainly state that this is designed for the iPhone.

Right now, the distant between my crank arm sensor and device is 9mm but the distant between the speed sensor and the speed sensor magnet is 17.5mm.
Van Lam
Both will work similarly well with apps that pair well with devices and similarly poorly with apps that don't pair well.

I've had the opportunity to test ride two of the new Bluetooth Smart cadence and speed sensors (this one from Topeak and this one from Runtastic ). I'm using an iPhone 5, but had the girl friend ride with them using her android phone (for apps other than Runtasic as sensors are iPhone only).

We tried to limit bias by using the sensors with both Topeak's and Runtastic's apps as well a third party app. What we found was a little surprising, but then not surprising. Each of the sensors paired nicely with some apps (topeak and mapmyride worked very well) and poorly with others (but the Bluetooth pairing on Runtastic was difficult). Since they both used the same smart Bluetooth this wasn't particularly surprising, but having read reviews on many branded smart Bluetooth sensors I think that the sensor is often blamed while the app is let off the hook. You may buy your sensor because you love the app that sponsors it, but if you run into problems it's worth while to look at other apps that might be built more around easy sensor pairing.

If you run into issues I've found that with just about any app you're most likely to solve your issue if you un-pair, turn the blue tooth off and then on, re-enter the app, spin the cranks a few times, start trying to pair the sensor, and spin the crank a few more times. Its not always convenient, but it works and once you're paired you should be good whenever you start your app (assuming it saves your pairing info).

Beyond the apps and pairing, Form Factor and Installation:

The most exciting difference (for me) between the Topeak and the Runtastic sensor is the form factor.

I've had this PanoBike sensor for a couple of weeks now. Used it for about 200 miles. It has worked very well. The instructions weren't the best, but installing it on my 2010 Specialized Allez road bike took only 15 minutes. The sensor fit well on my chain stay using the zip ties that came with the product. I paired it easily with my iPhone 5 using Cyclemeter app. It took less than 30 seconds to pair. It seems to be accurate with the speed and cadence as I ride. But I haven't compared it to a traditional cyclocomputer. I really do recommend this! It's seen some rough weather in the rain and some very rough streets in Chicago and haven't had a problem with it.

I love it in part because it's the only one I can get to work on my bike. My left chain stay has a bare brake cable on the top, and my right chain stay has the same thing on the bottom. The perfect combination to prevent using sensors with an arm like the Wahoo Blue SC. I need to mount the sensor hanging on the chain stay instead of sitting on top of it.

The Topeak is also not designed for that, but it works there. The only issue is that now the cadence sensor is towards the rear, and the speed sensor is towards the front. However the spacing worked out so that I can put the magnet on the spoke right up against the spoke nipple, and the pedal magnet fastens itself against the pedal bolt, and they go perfectly over the center of the S and C spots respectively.

I was impressed how sensitive the sensors are compared to my old Cateye. I first tested it with the Cateye magnets which were still on the bike, and it would pick them up almost an inch away. The magnets that come with the Topeak are huge in comparison, so you don't need to fine tune the sensor positions to allow them to sense the magnets. Good thing too, since the two sensors cannot be moved separately. (That's why the other ones have that arm, so that the sensors can be positioned separately to get closer to their respective magnets.)

If anything, they may be a little too sensitive. I did have to adjust the position to make sure that the cadence magnet was far enough away to assure that it wasn't picked up by the speed sensor. (My reversed orientation crosses the circles traced by the magnets, where those circles don't cross in the normal orientation. That probably exacerbates this issue.

Bought this to replace a Wahoo one that literally fell apart.
Hit a rain storm on my first ride with the Panobike and it was no problem. Just wipe it off later.
Installs like a rock, one piece, no arm to break off (Hello, Wahoo?), and several mounting options to make sure the magnets can get close enough. A little adjustment on install and I've had flawless service from this item. Can be within an inch of the magnets and will work, so even though it looks impossible that it would work, it does the job.
They claim the battery lasts for 5 years. I don't even care!
Watch out for the magnets. They are super strong and cling together in the package. Separate them over a cloth or something soft so they don't hit the floor - they can be cosmetically damaged when dropped, but still work great.
Wish I hadn't bought the Wahoo item, which is a re-branded generic. See my review there.
