Excellent, when you get it working,
This review is from: Topo USA 8.0 East Region [Old Version] (DVD-ROM)
Make sure your computer is completely updated (latest OS service packs, browser version, and video card drivers) or Topo 8.0 will not work. Once it's working, however, it does everything advertised and more. The interface is pretty easy to pick up without reading through any manuals.
The wealth of information that you can glean from a created route is outstanding. The 3D feature is fun to play with. You can get aerial or satellite images to create a more visually-realistic 3D image (the software comes with a certificate for $40 of downloads from Delorme's library). If you want to plan hikes or cycling routes, this software is an outstanding tool.

The maps are good, but the user interface truly stinks. If they had a video tutorial or any decent documentation it would help, but as is, it is fairly useless.

Don't buy unless you own a Delorme GPS,

I bought this hoping to use it with my Garmin GPS and was disappointed when I found out I couldn't. The software itself is ok but you have to purchase satellite imagery at an additional cost. I find myself using Google Earth and the mapping software that came with my Garmin GPSMAP GPS rather than Topo USA.
Topo USA does do a very good job illustrating terrain in 3D and I do use this feature if I need it but I have to enter coordinates into my GPS manually. If you own a Delorme Earthmate GPS then Topo USA would be much more useful.

I haven't taken the time to really get to know how to use the software. It's not going to be as easy as I hoped. I initially wanted to be able to print out simple topo maps for myself. The graphics I have seen so far are much more complex and the whole program seems to be for GPS trekkers. Interesting graphics.

Don't waste your money,

I recently purchased Topo USA 8 to help me find old mines, and I'm VERY disappointed. I was using a free map service online called [...] and I figured Topo 8 would be more detailed. The free map site shows over 50 mines, shafts, tunnels, wells and prospects that are seen easily. Topo 8 has 5 mines and the symbols are very hard to see. The free map also has more detailed dirt roads and there names which Topo 8 does a very poor job on. If you are looking for mines, caves or tunnels don't waste your money on this program like I did. Not user friendly at all.
