This review is from: Topo USA: Topo Maps of the Entire Us (CD-ROM)
I should first say that I already owned Delorme's Street Atlas software. The Street Atlas product was very impressive and i enjoyed using it regularly. My positive impression with the Street Atlas led me to purchase Delorme Topo USA 2.0. That was about 18 months ago. I was extremely disappointed with the product. Major flaws with 2.0 were a. 3-d views don't accurately display data that was shown in 2-d view ...i.e. roads 'break apart', sections of land are moved to the wrong location. b. no way to automatically create a trail route by simply clicking on two endpoints i.e. as you can do with roads in street atlas 3. program is extremely slow even on a 667 Mhz pentium . 4 program doesn't 'release memory' when you close 3-d map. i.e. after opening several successive 3-d maps , you're system runs out of memory and stops running.
I sent back ver 2.0 for a full refund ( no trouble from the folks at Delorme ). When they came out with v3.0, i thought i'd give it another try. Sorry to say, they haven't improved alot. They did fix the problem with automatically creating routes on a trail between two points. it is a nice feature if you want to hike a section of the appalachian trail but would like to determine the level of difficulty first. just set the endpoints and the profiler automatically tells you the elevation changes. nicely done. unfortunately, the other problems weren't fixed. Worse yet, when you want to construct a new route there is no way to make incremental changes. for example, in word editors, if you want to manually select multiple words that are not consecutive, you hold the ctrl key down and click to add or click to remove the last one. with topo 3.0, if the software misunderstands the intended route section that you wanted to add ( i.e. it should have been a railroad and not a stream or road ) the program will force you to start all of the sections from scratch. unnerving. this prevents the possibility of using the program as a way of evaluating rail-to-trails bike and hiking paths.
Ok...to their credit, they refunded my money again after returning v3.0
If they would just put some serious development effort behind this program, it might be worth the money they charge.
