Get on down with the e-minor sound,

a pleasant collection of lush b-sides----and good b-sides, not just filler to take up space on disc. keeps the vibes established on "split" and "lovelife" with a deft combination of jaunty jump-around numbers and smoothly flowing contemplative bits. i highly recommend it.

Tracklist: 500 (Shake Baby Shake), I Have The Moon, Ex, I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend, Matador, Outside World, I'd Like To Walk Around In Your Mind, Carmen, Shut Up, Cul De Sac, Demystification, Tinkerbell.A collection of most (not all) of the b-sides from Lovelife, many of these songs were good enough to be on the album! I Have The Moon (written by S. Merritt) is simply beautiful. Tinkerbell is one of my all-time favorite Lush songs. I can't believe it was "just a b-side". I first heard this on the "Sharks Patrol These Waters" compilation, and it knocked me out. The Tinkerbell on Topolino is a different version, not as hard, but still [is great]. The lyrics are a killer critique of a woman who can never be friends with other women. I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend has the same poppy-punch as 500 (Shake Baby Shake). Ex is a call for peace and understanding with an old lover. "Unknown" wrote I'd Like To Walk Around In Your Mind, and it's simply charming. Topolino is perfect for Lush fans who never got their hands on all the singles from Lovelife!

I would say this is the disc for the die-hard Lush fan. I drove to Montreal to get it. It's a collection of b-sides that sounds as good as any album to me. I think its the b's from "Lovelife" which makes sense since it sounds most like that album. A few pop-rock tracks like "Carmen" with some softer acoustic type songs are a good mix. Then you get the song "I have the moon" which is very dreamy, my personal favorite, and can also be found on the "nowhere" soundtrack. Anyone new to Lush should just get the best of.

Compelling Collection of Lush Rarities,

This compilation of rare Lush tracks includes not only strong shoegazer songs ("Carmen") for which Lush is best known, but also some great and off-beat jazz instrumentals ("Cul-de-Sac," "Matador") and pop songs ("Tinkerbell"). "Ex" mixes brooding lyrics with intense strumming and Lush's trademark, trebly lead. It's interesting to speculate as to how Lush would have evolved musically were it not for their untimely and tragic breakup. |
