5.0 out of 5 stars Cary Grant Made Topper A Trademark of HIs Suave Urbanity
Cary Grant nailed what was wanted in 1930s American film. The Depression was going on and people wanted urbanity, sauveness and carefree glamour. Cary Grant could deliver this like no one else. He was renowned for it through his entire career. This was the perfect movie to really focus the public on how perfect he was for that role.

1.0 out of 5 stars BOTH GREAT MOVIES ARE HERE BUT THE VIDEO QUALITY IS TOTALLY LAME! DON'T BUY THIS CRAP!
I would recommend avoiding this particular DVD set of Topper and Topper Returns simply because the quality is sooooooo totally bad. If there are better abet more expensive versions of Topper and Topper Returns available please buy them as both of these movies are gems that deserve to be seen without the blurred haze of this truly bad video transfer. 5.0 out of 5 stars Cary Grant Made Topper A Trademark of HIs Suave Urbanity, September 23, 2009
This review is from: Topper / Topper Returns (Enhanced Double Feature) (DVD)
Cary Grant nailed what was wanted in 1930s American film. The Depression was going on and people wanted urbanity, sauveness and carefree glamour. Cary Grant could deliver this like no one else. He was renowned for it through his entire career. This was the perfect movie to really focus the public on how perfect he was for that role.

The sauve, carefree Kirby's are rich and party all the time. On a typical night of partying, clubbing and drinking, they are driving in their roadster and they run into a tree. The crash kills them instantly. They are ghosts and seek to redeem themselves in the afterlife by taking their stodgy old banker friend, Cosmo Topper, in hand and show him how to lighten up and have a good time. This is where the film really takes off because Cosmo Topper is not a willing "debutante for the ball". So the Kirbys and Toppers are squared off for what is a high good time.

I loved this at any age I watched it, from when I was kid to today. It holds up very well. And there never was another Cary Grant.

No language, nothing suggestive or offensive and, none of the modern day stupidity! Our five kids couldn't believe that there was so much intelligent humor in "the days of old"! We have watched the movies over and over and laugh every time... Cary Grant was the best and the movies were wonderful.... We highly recommend them..

Both Movies are FIVE STARS EASY... THIS VIDEO TRANSFER FOR ALL THE REASONS STATED HEREIN ARE LESS THAN ONE STAR IN QUALITY! If these terrible quality copies of Topper and Topper Returns are the only things available better to buy these than be without such an awesome set of comedy movies. Topper and Topper Returns are two of the brightest gems in my vast DVD collection!

Topper and Topper Returns are the two best movies of the Topper Trilogy. Topper Takes A Trip while still mildly funny is by far the weakest of the three Topper series offerings. Topper Returns is hands down the funniest of the three Topper series offerings. Topper the first in the series has the MOST Star Power with Carey Grant as its leading man. The first Topper installment is great and funny in its own right and worth its price. My problem with this specific Topper Set is while the sound is pretty good the video image quality is truly awful. If you look hard enough Amazon usually has a single disk version of Topper Returns where the video and sound quality are first rate. I just love Topper Returns so every time Amazon offers a new version I buy it just to have another copy.

To be fair this version of Topper and Topper Returns are watchable if no other options exist but only just barely watchable. The images of all the actors faces are are ghost like and fuzzy at even a slight distance. You would not really know how terrible the video quality is in this Topper \ Topper Returns set if you did not own a quality version where the video and sound are awesome instead of awful! The packaging only indicates that Topper alone is in this box. The people who did the horrible video \ audio transfer of this Topper \ Topper Returns DVD set did and equally lame job of producing the DVD packaging that omits any reference to the Topper Returns movie that is on the single DVD.

this is one of Grant's early triumphs in film. 1937 was a good year for Hollywood. it boasted such great films as LOST HORIZON, THE LIFE OF EMILE ZOLA, STELLA DALLAS, DEAD END and this one among others. good humor and dry wit reign throughout. although Grant's onscreen time pales a little in comparison to Constance Bennett and Roland Young, it's still a worthy vehicle for Grant.

the picture isn't exactly pristine but still very good for an independent distributer. the audio is quite clear.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brief comment, March 23, 2010
This review is from: Topper / Topper Returns (Enhanced Double Feature) (DVD)
Please note I saw this movie on TV so I can't speak to the quality of the video transfer or its features.

Based on the novel by Thorne Smith, this was the book that the G.I.'s were reading overseas in the trenches of WWII. It features a couple of hard drinking, hard-partying, free spirits who die in a car crash and become ghosts. Now literally free spirits, they decide to liven up their stuffy banker friend's life and liberate him from his even stuffier wife. Incidentally, Thorne Smith liked to party, drink, and have a good time too, so in some ways his books are based on his own lifestyle.

Probably his best known story, some people will recall the TV series from much later starring Leo G. Carroll, which is how I came to know the story as a boy. But I had never seen the whole movie until now. It's a delightful, screwball comedy and farce from another age, and it was just the thing to cheer up the lives of Depression weary Americans. With his terriffic comic timing and air of goofy exasperatedness (as one critic referred to Grant's acting), there was no one who could do it better than he.

I also enjoyed seeing Billie Burke as Cosmo Topper's wife (who I mostly knew as the good witch in The Wizard of Oz). Roland Young is also excellent as the banker who becomes the unwitting target of the two ghost's efforts to being a little excitement into his dull, drab, and proper life. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.

Topper and Topper Returns are both worth watching. Grant is his skillfully comedic self making this a slap happy classic.

Well worth every penny, they are both good, but Topper (the original) is the best. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves comedies and the older movies.

I enjoy the older movies... Both Topper and Topper return has been on TV during the past year. The quality of this video nothing does not compare to what I saw on TV. The copy I purchased showed to much grain. If the DVR I was using had not broken down I would have recorded it from the TV. 4 March 2011
