5.0 out of 5 stars Mars Attacks is back! August 17, 2012

Mars Attacks is back in a big way. Topps is partnering with toy, game, comic, and clothing manufacturers to relaunch the brand in the largest merchandising scheme since the 1996 movie. As a long time fan I couldn't be happier. I've loved the brand ever since I first saw the 1994 reissue card set as a kid.

This time around we're getting the original set reprinted on thick card stock, reminiscent of the 1962 originals, as well as 10 new paintings based off of unused Wally Wood sketches, and 15 cards highlighting art from the new comic book.
The cards ship in a replica box, mine was stove in, but the packs were undamaged. In 24 packs I was able to pull the full base set of 80 cards, as well as three of the five 3D card set.

The real reason for old fans to tune in are the new sketch cards. Limited to one, and only one per box, these chase cards feature new rough art that varies greatly in quality. Mine was a close-up pen sketch of martians face.
If I had to complain about the content of the new set, I would argue that these sketch cards are unnecessarily rare. Some of the more colorful and detailed sketch cards are going for several hundred dollars at auction as of the time of this writing. They are truly something new in the Mars Attacks hobby, and it is a shame that collectors with limited budgets won't get to enjoy the full range of new visions this subset has to offer.

All in all, a faithful and respectful update of a classic. Long time fans are unlikely to see anything new precipitating the need to buy more than one box, instead maybe chasing down the individual sketch cards they like at auction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mars Attacks cards are cool! December 7, 2012

I had these when they first came out as a kid. They printed the box to look like the original box. The original Base Set of 55 cards is here, but on thicker stock. The backs of the cards look just like the original cards (brown backs). Plus there are the extra Deleted Scenes (10) cards, New Universe (15) cards, Lenticular 3-D cards (5), plus extra Sketch cards packed 1 in every case (8 boxes).

3.0 out of 5 stars One more time (redux) December 7, 2012

Why like it? It's Mars Attacks- and the sketches are sometimes pretty cool
Why dislike it? High price and "sketchy" collation.
