5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent children's book with lots of imagination and "love" built into it, April 20, 2006
This review is from: Topsy Turvy Land (Paperback)
Topsy Turvy Land is a book where kids explore the "what if's" of creation. What if colors were different? What if snakes could sing? Donna Shepherd utilizes her excellent writing skills to introduce children and their parents to a world of possibilities. In the midst of all of the topsy-turvy, she even had time, with her illustrator Kevin Scott Collier to add "love" to her book - the question is - Can you find all of the hearts?

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, imaginative story that will delight children, September 2, 2006
This review is from: Topsy Turvy Land (Paperback)
I loved this story. Donna Shepherd's Topsy Turvy Land is original, charming and imaginative. Though I haven't had a chance to read the story aloud to a young child, I can't wait to read it to my grand nieces and nephews or to my future grandchildren. I know that when my sons were around four or five years old they would have loved the fanciful animals Donna Shepherd describes as she imagines a different whimsical and colorful world. They would have chimed in with their own made up animals and colors for the landscape. And while this is a fun story that stimulates imagination, it has a sweet message about the beauty of God's creation just as it is. The artwork complements the story beautifully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Color Me Charmed, August 4, 2006
This review is from: Topsy Turvy Land (Paperback)
Do you need a gift for a grandchild, niece or nephew? Topsy Turvy Land will delight you and the kids you love. You'll flip for the friendly pink hippo with black polka-dots, or the proud doggie who waits for her eggs to hatch. Don't worry if you've never seen those sights before--you're in Topsy Turvy Land. It's a world of a different color, and those colors are bright! The animals please the eyes and the rhymes are a treat for the ears. Every time the kids coax you to read the story, you'll notice something new. For instance, you can look for the hidden hearts on each page. Maybe you can talk about God's great idea of making cows walk on the ground instead of making them fly over your house--well, that's what they do in Topsy Turvy Land. Donna Shepherd and Kevin Scott Collier make us smile while showing that God loves us, so all's right with the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars great fun for little ones, August 19, 2005

Donna Shepherd's Topsy Turvy Land is a fun, colorful book about God's creation. Imagining what things would look like with polka dot zebras and green monkeys ultimately concluding God's creation is the best.

Published children's poet, accomplished writer, and budding theologian in her own right, Donna Shepherd's words sing off the pages. The imagery is delightful and sure to make children of all ages smile. Sixteen pages of whimsy and wonder culminate in the proclamation that God's creation is indeed very good.

Consider this passage: "He made the giraffe with his very long neck, / And the toucan with gigantic beak, / God must have had fun, / Creating each one, / And all in just under a week!" Rhymes which are pleasing are coupled with fun images sure to entertain.

Searching the stacks of children's books at libraries and bookstores can be overwhelming for any parent. It is nice to find a book that has a redemptive message for preschoolers. Sure to become a tattered favorite in chubby hands, this book is written with all the skill of Sandra Boynton. I highly recommend this book for children (and adults) of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Story, August 25, 2006
This review is from: Topsy Turvy Land (Paperback)
This is a wonderful story about the earth and animals that sparks the imagination and glorifies God's creation. The illustrations are as magical as the story. It is a great bedtime story that my daughter asks for frequently. The only downside is that this is not a hard cover book. This will be a favorite in our home.

Donna Shepherd and Kevin Collier partnered to create a delightful world of color and rhyme that will make children giggle. I bought this wonderful book for my granddaughter's birthday. I can't wait to give it to her. The rhyme is fun and the message is an important one. We should all appreciate the world God created for us.

4.0 out of 5 stars A delight for the imagination, August 19, 2005

The kids in my house love this book--the four little ones AND the two big ones. The words and pictures tickle the imagination and highlight the limitless breadth of God's creation. Biblical truth permeates every entertaining page.

The best endorsement I can give this book is this: Last night I allowed my 5-year old and my 4-year old to take three books to bed with them. The five-year old grabbed Topsy Turvy Land, igniting a small skirmish. The peace talks ended with a compromise--a five minute limit on Topsy Turvy Land before swapping with your brother. I guess we may have to buy another copy....or three or four.
