This is an amazing true-to-life saga, beautifully written, and totally engaging. I couldn't put it down. I have read many books about WWII, but this book provides totally different perspectives on the period.
Parts of this book might be considered "R-rated" material, but such scenes are written with such delicacy and grace, that one can't help but be deeply moved.
In fact, the entire book is quite profoundly moving! Some smart movie producer should pick this up. How can it miss being a huge hit? A war story, a dog tale, historical novel, sex, and humor! In all, great reading!
a decent and civilized youth growing into a decent and civilized
man, all while fighting the war in Europe. Topsy, the dog in the book,
was fortunate indeed to find the author, and America was fortunate
indeed to find the author.
Topsy, a stray British mutt, adopted Rudi in the Stafford school barracks shortly after he disembarked from the U.S.S. Aquitania. Promiscuous and indiscrete, she gave birth a litter of puppies in England, in France, and in Germany along the way to victory in Europe. Topsy helped Rudi establish a special place in the hearts of his buddies, his officers, and civilians in all three countries. Topsy will find a place in your heart too.
You see and feel the war through the eyes of a young man, as told by an old man steeped in history and culture. This intensely personal view of the war is a precious and unpretentious look at a world in turmoil through the eyes of ordinary people.
You'll feel a close kinship with Rudi's and Topsy's buddies and officers. It was especially fun to read the epilogue and find out what happened to all of these remarkable men you've come to know and love. You'll thoroughly enjoy this well written book. I did.
