Editorial Reviews

Review

"A genuine, nuanced tale about friendship, love and family, pretty much unrivaled by its contemporaries." —ANIME DIET

"Toradora! is a lot like it’s subject matter: In turns hilarious, rambling, confused, charming, and foolish, but ultimately a worthwhile and heartwarming experience" —ANIME-PLANET

The characters are great and they develop very well and deeply as the series progresses.

I enjoy both the anime and manga but to be frank I really like the manga better.

Ryuuji Takasu is a second year student with a gentle demeanor but a perpetual glare giving him the appearance of a school rebel. Despite his best attempts he cannot change his looks and as a result all but gives up on having a girlfriend even when he ends up sitting right near his crush, Minori Kushieda.

Taiga Aisaka lives alone in a large apartment. She is short of stature and short of temper which earns her the nickname "Palm Top Tiger." For many reasons dealing with her family life and how others view her, Taiga has developed a negative view of the world and doesn't hesitate to lash out when people annoy her.

On the first day of school, fate brings the two together as Ryuuji bumps into the short Taiga and through a series of twists and it turns out they discover that Taiga's crush is Ryuuji's best friend,Yuusaku Kitamura, and Ryuuji's crush, Minori Kushieda, is Taiga's close friend.

Further discovering that they are neighbors, Ryuuji and Taiga decide to help each other with their crushes, but Taiga, realizing Ryuuji would do anything to be close to Minori, takes full advantage and begins to turn him into her personal servant.

These series of events start one of my favorite and one of the funniest romance comedies currently in print. Toradora! is truly worth the read for fans of the light novel, fans of the anime and newcomers to this wonderful series.

For those of you who do not know, Toradora is based off of the light novel which has 10 volumes in Japan. Now onto the actual review. The story of Toradora kicks off as Ryuuji is doing his daily routine of being the "wife of the house" with cleaning, preparing breakfast for his mother etc... And him going to school where everyone is scared of him only because his eyes look like one of a thugs. But in reality Ryuuji is actually kind, so this caused him much trouble in his past and present. And at school he meets another easily misunderstood character Taiga (aka Palm-top tiger due to her short stature)when he mistakenly bumps into her provoking her to punch him and later to find that he is her next door neighbor.

From there on it's a school-life/romantic comedy that depicts the days of Ryuuji, Taiga and their friends having fun. Now onto the presentation of the manga, the art is good and it reflects that this is a heart-warming manga. The characters are well-thought out and they are people you can relate to especially if your a high school student and believe there will be character development throughout the series. The manga adaption also follows the anime adaption quite well with not much difference or any at all from what I have seen. So if you enjoyed the anime, this manga should be down your alley as well.

As someone who had never read a manga in his life but who is an avid fan of anime, I thought nothing could live up to the amazing anime that is Toradora. I figured I'd give this whole manga thing a try at least. Well, I'm happy to report that the manga is on par/ borderline better than the anime! The manga goes into considerably more detail than the anime, enough so to keep me guessing at how things would turn out. The art and dialogue is great, both help to convey the humor and romance of the series fantastically.

What else can I say, other than that this product is highly recommended to everyone, not just fans of manga, and I look forward to reading the other 9 as they are made available.

I was a little skeptical of this manga, seeing as it fit so many different manga cliches. Two lead characters who are perfect for each other but are oblivious to it? Check. Cute high school atmosphere? Check. Technically almost all of the stuff in this series have been used before in various different manga & anime series.

Yet when this series puts it together it's absolutely fantastic. I just couldn't put this manga down & I hated that I didn't have all of the volumes in front of me to read.

The artwork in this is just adorable. It hits all of my key "cute" needs & it also shows the characters' quirks & personalities incredibly well. I can tell that the artist really put a lot of love into drawing this. If that wasn't enough, the story is just so well done that I find myself getting very drawn into everything.

I just can't wait to get the next volume of this series!

"The hit romantic comedy is now a must have manga" and it isn't a lie.

If you are a newcomer to the series and haven't watched the anime yet then you are not left in the dark nor will you find this manga a romantic pience of garbage. I for one, am not a fan of romantic stories however Toradora is an amazing story with humour packed in to every chapter as we go through the story of a set of three dimensional characters. The artwork is high quality with high detail inked into every page, from cover to cover and is a pleasure to the eyes. I insist that you take a few minutes on each page to admire the artwork and feel the detail of the drawings.

The only regret I have about buying this book is not to have done it any sooner. Toradora is a must read for teen and adult readers as you dig deeper into the 2 sided world of Taiga and Ryuuji.
