Enveloping,
This review is from: Torchin: You Are My Love (Audio CD)
There is a tendency to remember Frankie Laine as a purveyor of popular novelty songs. This CD, recorded in 1958, puts that impression to the lie. Torchin' shows off Laine as a popular balladeer, making his distinctive if less than remarkable voice a vehicle for songs about love and loss. One comes away feeling that Laine must have been a perfect night club singer. You Are My Love is a type of album no one would put out today, a tribute of devotion to a woman who either is one's wife or lover or both. The arrangements on this second LP are subtler, with an especially prominent woodwind section. Laine's take on the quasi-religious number Because is better than Perry Como's, in part because of his quiet singing and also because of the spare accompaniment. Try a Little Tenderness is tenderness itself in Laine's rendition. If you enjoy the main roads of American popular singing and want to branch out from Sinatra and Co., this CD by Frankie Laine is a good avenue to try out.
