Torchon lace is how most people learn to make continuous bobbin lace, and this book does a better job of teaching than any.

I had already seen a copy of this book before I bought it and that was what prompted me to go find a copy for myself. The pictures are large enough to see the detail and the author takes you step by step through the process and with different colors for each bobbin pair so that you can see the progression. It's very detailed and just what most of us need. So many bobbin lace books show a pricking, tell you the number of bobbins (maybe) and the size thread to use. From there on in, you're on your own. This book was extremely affordable compared to many of the other bobbinlace books which are far less informative and therefore, just sit on a shelf gathering dust. I believe if you want a "dying art" to continue, you have to make it understandable and available, which this book does.

This book is a very detailed, easy to follow guide to learning to do Torchon Lace. The pictures are excellent and by using different colored threads, a reader is able to follow the thread through the lace to see exactly how the stitches interact. It is a good beginner text, however, the illustrations and samples would be pleasing to an expert (though I am not one!!).

Of the many books I have looked at on learning bobbin lace, this is the best. Torchon lace is how most people learn to make continuous bobbin lace, and this book does a better job of teaching than any. Using both written instruction plus numerous photos, you work your way through a series of projects that gradually increase in complexity while building on what came before. By the end of the book, you have the necessary skills and experience to move to larger or more complex projects or even design your own. For me, this book is better than classes, since I can move at my own pace, review as often as necessary, and work whenever it is convenient for me. Highly recommended!

There is no teacher in my area so I am learning bobbin lace on my own. This book is incredible. I am already through the first four samplers. The author writes clearly every step of the way. I never have to ask myself what does she mean. It's all there as clear as can be. No guesswork at all. The samplers are graduated and that is helping a lot. So, if you are thinking of learning this wonderful craft on your own get this book. Absolutely wonderful!

This book has the best photo's illustrating the techniques. The wide variety of stitches, techniques and how to's will give any lace maker a great reference book.
It's not just for reference. A new lace maker could follow along trying out each technique. The illustrations and photos shown use colored threads, and you can clearly see how the stitches are formed by following the colors. This is a great idea that I haven't seen very often. And, this one is the best I have seen so far. There are also a few patterns to complete items, once you have mastered the stitches.
I have recommended it to a few beginning lace makers and they have also found it excellent to use and are slowing build up there knowledge and improving their techniques.

I have just gotten into bobbin lace and have made only 3-4 items. This book is an easy to follow for us novices and has great detailed pictures to go with the instruction. If you are just into bobbin lace, I highly recommend that this be added to your library.
