Gary Russell, Genius,

This review is from: The Torchwood Archives (Hardcover)
I bought this as a Christmas gift for a friend who's an absolute Torchwood nut. I'm a fan myself and when it arrived I could hardly put the book down to wrap it! It's fantastic, with extra material from the original series one website and a compilation of the BBC America Captain's Blog posts, as well as series two website material. While it's nothing new if you're a fan who's followed the extra source material along with the show, it's still a good read, with clever little ins to Doctor Who and jokes from around the Hub. Gary Russell weaves a very interesting tale to "explain" the book itself, too. Definitely something for a Torchwood fan's shelf!

This book is much, much more than an episode guide with pretty pictures. The layout of the book is in a format of a top secret manual, and even the insides of the book maintain that. Each episode-specific guide is labeled 'Ongoing Archive Notes', and each has a section on Alien Activity, Alien Technology, Rift Activity, Security, Staff, and Other Staff Issues. The last section often has hilarius commentary like this for example: "Now that we have all tried, it is clear that only Ianto knowns how to operate that damn coffee maker. I suspect it contains alien technology".
Throughout the book you'll see cool things like clips of 'real' newspapers with headlines like "Alien Skeleton Snapped UP by Millionaire Parker', reports by Torchwood staff, and memos between characters. As a Martha fan I really liked the one on page 133. Overall, if you're a Torchwood fan, then definitely get this book.

I was hoping that a book called _The Torchwood Archives_ would present information regarding the production of the _Torchwood_ television series. Instead, this is an in-universe work of fiction composed by a fictional researcher and various members of Torchwood over the decades. The book functions in part as an episode guide to the first two seasons but is largely a scrapbook presenting bits and pieces of Torchwood history as collected by the fictional researcher.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the format of a secret investigator who snuck into the Hub and dug up the 'dirt' on Torchwood but was found out and instead his expose tell-all on Torchwood remains in the Hub as source material for all operatives.
Since Captain Jack, Ianto and Captain John are my fave characters from the series I loved the little bits of insight into their thoughts and actions. This is definitely a must-have for the die-hard Torchwood fans. My only problem though was that it took almost 3 months for this book to get shipped to me! I ordered it before Christmas last year and received it last week!!! However, my enjoyment of the book still gives it a 5-star rating. XD

It took me a long time to read through this and maybe that's why I have given it 4 stars instead of 5. It does seem to list all the major and some minor items from the shows, including some I did not even remember although I must have seen them !

Excellent... for the Torchwood fans this fills in all those little gaps that most production series usually leave to the public's imagination.
